Suri was spayed yesterday and has been on metacam. She didnt poop all day and had to be syringe fed fluids last night and up until this evening! When she did she pooped out this gross sludgy poop. I’ve called my vet and its nothing to be alarmed about as its a small quantaty and the rest of her poop is fine now. He said if shes not showing signs of pain tomorrow dont give her the metacam as its upsetting her tummy. (common side effect).

Anyway i cleaned her bum and tail with lukewarm water and kitchen towel (its soft and i was gentle) but idealy i need something like a shampoo to really clean up (its perfect fly weather in the UK atm and i brought rat and ferret shampoo by mistake earlier today)

if anyone has any safe alternatives I’d be really interested as I dont want any risk of flystrike after a stressfuil op

        Many thanks

I use Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo when I clean my bunny (is this safe?) if so I recommend that.

Here’s a great link on cleaning messy bums, both wet and dry methods:

Little Puffy Tail thank you for that link, .. interesting reading. I have to admit when I faced the problem I was terribly ignorant of rabbit dos and don’ts, but I did wash his bottom by holding it under warm running water and wiping gently with a cloth. It was only necessary when he was very unwell so he lay on his back in my hands and seemed to be relieved, I presume finding the water soothing. Might not be the recommended method but I’m happy not to have put anything I shouldn’t have on him. I like knowing about the calendula ointment (which is easy to make at home), but I’m a little puzzled, … why not use regular cornstarch? Why would it need to be a powder? You can use it on babies (human that is) and it has great anti-fungal properties all its own, … and its cheeper. Besides I use it in other things and have a massive container on hand should it ever be needed, and I do not use cornstarch based powders on myself. Not a big deal but I am curious. Thanks if someone can explain.

                  Thanks for your advice everyone
kcomstoc – haha dont worry I would’ve just applied the pet store shampoo if i’d have brought the right stuff, theres so much you dont know until your in the situation!
LPT- thanks for the link, the mess isnt too bad so a dry bath will probably be the less stressful method
