        Some background:

Monty had calluses on his hocks when we brought him home (about a year ago). They were fine for a long while and then a couple months back one of them started to bleed. We took him to the vet and they gave us a cream and some antibiotics. They healed up fine but the calluses remained.

        Now:

We have laid down snoozy beds and fleece in his habitat. There’s probably an 1″ + in padding . Last week I noticed some of the callus coming off. No blood or anything it was like new skin underneath. Last night after his bonding session he hopped around on some non-padded floor for about 2-3 minutes before we noticed some blood. We looked at his feet and it wasn’t too bad just a tiny bit of blood (It wasn’t actively bleeding) around the edge of the callus. So we cleaned him up and applied his ointment (it has anti-bacterial stuff in it) and he seems fine. Not in pain or anything

I’m going to call the vet tomorrow morning to get advice. My question is for anyone else that’s dealt with hock issues in their bunnies. Does it ever end? Do they “get better” or is it always a problem? I don’t mind dealing with the issue but I’d like to know what to expect in his feet future.

Another question, keeping his habitat padded isn’t a problem but the main house isn’t carpeted and that’s where they excersise. Would putting some beds/soft rests around be enough to help? I’d hate for him to just keep injuring himself whenever he wants to play. It would be hard to try to pad the whole house >.<

        Any advice appreciated!

I have no experience with sore hocks so I can’t help in that department much but I saw towards the end of the post where you were trying to think of ways to keep the hard wood padded for play time?

The Tans were ruining our carpet in our house so we went out and bought one of those VERY large rugs to put down where they run around. You can find cheap ones at Home Depot as well as expensive ones that look very nice. But it gives our buns ample place to play and lounge around and run. But would give your big eared boy lots of places to play without hurting his poor feet! I think at Home Depot we saw ones ranging from $50 and up.

An area rug might be a good solution! My dog’s would probably like it too they hate the living room because it’s too slippery. Thanks for the tip. It’s definitely worth a shot… And I’ve been wanting area rugs for a while anyway.

On a different note, if anyone that’s dealt with sore hocks reads this have any of you tried the wraps seen here:

He doesn’t have bald spots though. I should take a picture of them one of these days.

I ended up not being able to chat with my vet today but I’m going to give her another ring tomorrow.

Are his nails kept clipped as short as possible?

I’ve been paying closer attention to his nail length but I could probably keep them a bit shorter. I get a bit paranoid about hitting the quick because he “flinches” his feet when I clip.

My bunny does that too, not all the time but sometimes he will “flinch” I get semi-close to the quick and then my boyfriend freaks out on me “you hit the quick” or “you’re too close” and i go back and cut in almost the same exact place and it’s fine. I have to assure my boyfriend that I don’t get too close even though he’s never clipped nails before *forehead smack*
