I’ve only had Ox for about two months now and today I decided it was time for his second nail trimming. I managed to get one single nail done after quite a few tries and he was not happy. He leaped off the sofa with quite the foot flick in my direction before coming back, grabbing the nail clippers and tossing them over the edge.

It’s going to be quite an ordeal getting him used to this, I’m sure.

Any tips and tricks for making nail trims easier on both of us? I’ve heard of trancing and the bunny burrito but I don’t want to have to put him through that unless I really have to. Currently I keep trying to do his nails while he’s eating but even my food adoring bun will abandon his food, albeit only for a few seconds at a time, when I go near his feet.

I am having a similar situation with Ashe, but she becomes aggressive around rapid movement. I have been putting chopped up parsley with a chopped up raisin in a little crock and letting her munch while I pick up her foot and move the fur with my finger. I can also use the clippers next to her face but I haven’t actually tried to clip a nail this way yet.

I had a pretty bad experience last night trying to get Ashe into a bunny burrito, but you might try it with yours lol. Ashe is too fast and wiggly, and I’m afraid I will hurt her back if I keep trying to flip her over. So we are working on doing it with her feet on the ground I will be watching your post too

I can touch his foot just fine. I can move away the fur from the nail and I can even rub the nail clippers on his feet. But as soon as I slide his nail into where it needs to go to be trimmed he leaps away.

            IT’S FRUSTRATING! BLARG!

I have a game plan though. We bought bananas today so I’m going to try and associate nail trimming with yummy treats. Everytime he lets me hold his foot, push back the fur, and get the clippers close to his nail I’m going to give him a banana smidge. Until all his nails have been trimmed he won’t be getting any other treat.

            Let’s hope it works, eh.

Also, good luck with Ashe! She seems like a character.

This is kind of what I’m doing with Ashe but I use a clicker before I reward because she loves to clicker train for tricks. Good luck! You might try clicker training. There are a lot of good videos on how to do it on youtube And it’s tons of fun! I use it to help keep Ashe out of trouble
