For his home right now we have a dog kennel for a mid-sized dog… The floor is removable and it is made from plastic… It’s minimalistic atm, with a water bottle, a hay feeder, 2 bowls ( for pellets, the other for veggies) and his litter pan which I have padded with paper towels and is in the corner of the cage… He seems to like it ok but I want better litter for his litter pan.. Also I’m not sure how big it should be… He fits inside of it but he can’t exactly sprawl out… I also want something for the bottom of the cage so that he doesn’t try to dig at the plastic… He also chews at the ends of his litter pan… As for toys… your guess is as good as mine… He seems to like mostly to explore things…and loves to hop in between the dining room chairs… What should I put at the bottom of his cage? What should I use for litter? How big should the litter box be? What else should be in his habitat? What can I get him to chew on instead of his litter box? What kind of toys do rabbits like?

I’m really lost… the pamphlet just says “something for your rabbit to chew on, and toys for the rabbit to play with” X.x

Well, for toys, he may not be into at his age and you did mention he may be blind…usually too at this age, they are no longer chewers. He may be more inclined to chill out and want to relax. You may want to give him something to chill out in – I have willow tents that my rabbits like to lay in.

I would recommend a dog exercise pen for his habitat – easy to maintain and move around and to clean too.

Ok just so I’m clear, I’m not certain about his age… The breeder told me he MIGHT have been about 7 but she didn’t really seem to know.. Secondly.. he does chew on things… He doesn’t chew on his bars but he chews a lot on the side of his litter pan… He’s still a feisty little guy, even if he his older.. if he is indeed older.. But I still think he needs something chewy

Usually large cat sized litter boxes are best. I use untreated wood stove pellets as litter and I love them. They are cheap, absorbent, and control odor. They are usually only available in the winter but you can get FelinePine, Equine Pine, and Dry Den which is packaged for animals and is basically the same thing. I get 40-50 lbs for $5 dollars.

Untreated willow toys work well for chewing. He can also chew cardboard. A lot of people stuff toilet rolls (the cardboard part) with hay and treats and bunnies seem to enjoy them.

I agree with Sarita that X-Pens make great habitats for indoor rabbits. I think it was discussed before that you move him inside and out? I would just keep him inside if possible. He can be caged when you’re not around which should keep him from bugging the cat. If the cat bugs him you can put something over his cage, out of site out of mind type thing.

Definitely then try some willow toys like MoveDiagonally suggested.

I’d suggest you go to the Binky Bunny store and spend some time looking through the different supplies. I had no idea what mine would like (not having them when I went shopping, you have an advantage you already know some of his preferences) you’ll learn a lot just by reading over toys and descriptions. I ordered a variety of different toys to see what would have appeal. If you check this site there are also some great suggestions for home made toys, its amazing what simple things make them happy. Mine adore the toilet paper roll, as Move Diagonally suggested I do stuff some with hay but even just a plain one is received with enthusiasm and it doesn’t last long. They also love playing with Tim Horton coffee cups, my last one could run through one a day (meant I pounced on every “double” cup I could lay my hands on!), and little brown paper lunch bags stuffed with hay and treats tied close with a few holes punched in them may also be of interest. You mention he likes digging so he may like a diggy box (several descriptions of how to make these on this site), and if he likes exploring and little areas he may adore a maze or some cardboard boxes. (You might want to checkout the maze haven again in the Binky Bunny store.) Some people use baby toys but I don’t have any experience with those. There’s a great variety out there. I’m sure once you’ve seen some examples you’ll be able to recognize and/or create some for yourself.

The cat and him really don’t bother each other that much, well the cat doesn’t bother the rabbit anyways… But I want them to get used to each other anyways and get along so right now I’m not bothered about them being in contact, I know my cat and she’s not done anything to try and hrut him… I think him being outside in decent enough weather will be good for him (I mean I wouldn’t keep a cat cooped up inside all the time in a rural situation like this and I wouldn’t do that with a rabbit either).. I’d just supervise him while he was out there and have an area fenced off. He has free roam of the house during the day and when I go to bed he’s in his cage… That’s just how I want it.. I really don’t want to restrict everything but one area for him so I don’t think I’ll be getting that x-pen. At the most I’d get a larger cage… All I needed were some other things to go in his cage.. I don’t think I’ll be shopping online for toys, I’d rather buy them in store… I’ll take a look to get some ideas but I don’t think I’ll be ordering online stuff… His cage definitely can’t fit a cat litter box in it so I think the one I have already will have to do for now.. When I have the money I’ll look into buying him a larger cage though..I’ll definitely look into getting him some of the natural litter… Also what would work for the bottom of his cage? The bottom right now is plastic and he likes to attempt to dig in it.. It makes a loud sound and I don’t expect it’s very good for his nails, so getting something to at least pad the bottom of the cage (without him wanting to use the toilet on it) would be beneficial, I think…

Supervised outside time is fine. If you’re not out there with him 100% of the time you’ll want to make sure any enclosure is predator proof and that he can’t dig out of it.

Buying toys in stores can be tricky as many things labeled for rabbits can be down right dangerous. Oxbow toys are all safe from what I know. Any willow toys that are untreated and without any extras should be fine. Be cautious of “Ware” brand toys but some of them are fine.

Cat litter boxes are the recommended size for a rabbit.  If your cage can’t fit one it might be too small in general. It’s recommneded that a single rabbit have a minimum of 4′ X 2′ (122 cm X 61 cm). How big is your current set up?

For the bottom of his cage you could look into sea grass mats. If he doesn’t chew on cloth you could line it with towels or blankets.

A lot of people use X-Pens INSTEAD of a cage. That’s what I was suggesting. I was not saying you should restrict him to the X-Pen for his play time.

                        If you go here:

                        https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/Gre…fault.aspx

And look through the pen section you’ll see examples of people using an X-Pen instead of a cage just in case you have a hard time visualizing it.

My bun, Triforce, has this cardboard tube that she loves to chew on.

Yes an x-pen INSTEAD of a cage.

Also he will be safer inside – they don’t feel cooped up – they feel safe.  However outside time 100% suprvised as MoveDiagonally said is perfectly fine although there are lots of dangers outside in the grass, in the sky, etc…

Oh I see what you’re saying… The cage he’s in right now is in the current dimensions L: 79 cm W: 49 cm and H: 54.6 cm
I want to get him a bigger cage anyways… but I’ll look to see if I can find some of this “X-Pen” stuff you mentioned… all I meant was I’d have to wait until I got him to a bigger living area to get him a bigger litter box. Well my rabbit can’t get at the sky so I don’t see how it can be dangerous xP What I want is a separate cage or area for when he is outside, but it would be more secure and yes I would be out there with him. Tbh I wouldn’t care that much about bringing him up but the woman who allowed me to have the rabbit insists that she wants me to take him outside… She says she wanted me to have a rabbit because she thought it would get me out more often… I don’t know if I agree with her methods but I will definitely have to discuss this with her… She seems to think that because the breeder we got it from seemed “nice” she knew exactly what was best for the rabbits and always treated them well… *Sigh* sorry if I seemed snappy before. I’ve more been frustrated with the woman I’m living with, since she thinks the rabbit is better off outside and doesn’t listen to me when I say that domesticated rabbits aren’t built for outdoors… Also she won’t listen when I say I want to take Bright Eyes to a vet experienced with rabbits… So I’ve been a bit concerned about my rabbit’s future and it’s made me a bit stressed…

LOL – no I’m thinking of birds of prey being in the sky. Not sure how having a rabbit is going to get you outside more :~) if she means in a social setting or just outside for sunshine. Anyway, your situation does sound complicated and stressful.

She meant getting out for sunshine, although I’m not sure which sunshine she’s referring to, since it’s been thunder storms just about all week

yeah it’s a bit stressful but idc, I’ll make sure this rabbit has a good life, even if I have to put my foot down about certain things…
