Is this spring mix safe for rabbits to eat?

        Ingredients:

        Spring Mix

Organic Baby Lettuces (Red and Green Romaine, Red and Green Oak Leaf,

Red Leaf, Lollo Rosa, Tango), Organic Mizuna, Organic Red and Green Chard,

Organic Baby Spinach, Organic Arugula, Organic Frisée, Organic Radicchio.

(The ingredients in each package may vary.)

My mom has it in the fridge constantly and thought if the bun could eat it.

Thanks. Then I guess I’ll be feeding it often.

Sounds tasty, my rabbits and I would both love it.

In case you’d like to have a reference, you could check this article and make a note of the vegetables mentioned: http://rabbit.org/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet/ As you’ll see your mix includes quite a few, and there is quite a bit of information to help you plan a healthy rabbit’s diet in the one article.

Everything in that mix is safe, however, I recommend buying lettuce mixes separate from the other ingredients due to oxalic acid levels. I tend to get spinach and chard, etc. individually so I can monitor how much is getting into the salad. Some pieces of chard can look like the different types of lettuce, so I prefer not to risk too much of something getting in there. If you aren’t planning to feed much from the mix, then I wouldn’t worry so much. Just my opinion – better safe than sorry.

My buns LOVE spring mix! I wouldn’t worry about the high oxalate stuff in there. There really isn’t a whole lot of spinach in there, for example. It makes up a pretty small part. At least in my experience anyway. Eucalyptus is right though, you do want to watch their intake on those.

I buy Spring mix to make convenient salads for myself and, of course, have to share a good chunk of it with my buns.

I buy spring mix all the time to mix into my buns salads and for those days I’m just feeling really really lazy but feel bad only feeding one type of veggie! :X

Thanks for the replies guys! I’ll monitor the intake of oxalates.

I don’t think you really need to monitor per say – I would just say not to give a full salad of just spring mix everyday if you are worried about it. Although I do every once in awhile and it has never had any negative effects.

As LBJ said – the amount of spinach in spring mix is quite a small amount.  I have never had a batch with a dominant portion of spinach ever.

I think it takes a while for the high amount of oxalic acids to become an issue. If, say, you had NOTHING to feed expect spinach for a day, I would recommend feeding a salad of spinach instead of starving the bun.

Spring mix is usually pretty well mixed up with different things that you probably wouldn’t get enough of any one thing in a handful to be a problem. I personally buy everything individually just because of the large variety of veggies I feed. I like to know how much of each thing I’m adding to the salad.
