So only 3 more months until i get my new apartment with my boyfriend and his two friends. I have been e-mailing the rescue for a few days setting things up for Caleb to have a female friend. Today I filled out the application and OMG I have never filled out an adoption application before. There were so many questions, but they all made sense to a point (I don’t know why they would need everyone’s occupation if my boyfriend and I are the ones that are going to take care of the bunnies). The thing that really threw me off was the $85 adoption fee….I didn’t know it would be so expensive for a bunny? Am I over-reacting? I know that it goes for the care of other rabbits but for me (I’m only 20 and all of my money for working is going to go for apartment rent and groceries and bunny stuff). My boyfriend is still in college (is currently in the nursing program) so he’s not working (he will be working this summer to save up money for the apartment and bunny care) but not during school. I’m just idk, I’m excited for the new bunny so I can save one and have a companion for Caleb but I just need some opinions I guess. How much was your adoption fee? Did it turn out well? Any happy ending stories would be awesome.

We paid $85 for Baxter, who came with a cage and all his food/bedding etc. Baby Boo was only $15, but came with nothing. Both were from their previous owners.

Before adopting Boo though, I researched the rescue near us, and they charge $45.00 for a non-fixed bun. But Boo was just so cute in his online pic – I just had to have him.

The rescue offered coupons with their buns for a local vet – to perform the neuter at a seriously discounted price of $75…which was a bargain compared to the $275 we paid for the procedure for our boys.

The bunny that we plan on getting will already be spayed so she won’t need to be spayed…which def helps a lot that’s for sure. Am I being ungrateful for this?

My local adoptions have a $50 adoption fee. They will not release a rabbit unfixed. Hope that gives some perspective!

I would pay $50 I will probably pay the $85 too but I just won’t be able to buy more things right away for the bunny.

I would think about it this way, how much does a spay cost in your area? If it costs more than $85 dollars than you’re saving money.

The rescue we adopted Dexter and Penny charges about $65 a rabbit I believe.

I agree, how much does a spay cost in your area? If it is a few hundred dollars, $85 is a bargain.

That’s what I forgot to realize and you’re right it is a bargain

That’s a very good deal – it’s not just about the cost for a spay however, it’s the overall cost it takes to care for a rabbit while they are being fostered – it’s not cheap and you aren’t even paying close to the costs for that.

I know, I wasn’t expecting that price (I only payed 30 for Caleb) so I was like “what?” but then after I posted this on here and thought about it and it made sense.

I’ve heard of adoption fees everywhere from $30 to over $100. When the rabbit is coming spay/neutered, you cannot get a better deal.

A higher adoption fee also works to weed out people who won’t care for the rabbit properly. The rescue needs to know that you’re willing to provide what is needed… Adequate housing, quality diet, and vet care as needed. If you balk at a reasonable adoption fee, they will question your ability to provide longterm card.

My shelter charges $75 per rabbit and they make no money on rabbits who come to them unspayed even with the discount the vets give. In my area the cost of a spay combined with a preliminary checkup is $150 and then factor in the costs of feeding the rabbit, volunteer hours, etc. and $75 is remarkabley cheap.

Yup they did, it wasn’t about not being able to provide for the rabbit for the rest of his life, but I told them I was going to wait a couple more months after I move in so that I could get everything ready. I told them I still wanted to adopt so it didn’t throw me off adopting but I just wasn’t expecting that price. It makes sense too that it weeds out the people that aren’t really interested.

Most adoptable rabbits from rescues also come with their first annual vet appointment as they are typically checked out before they leave the shelter. A typical annual for me costs about $54 per rabbit. So I would consider this also.
