I am bringing home a new bun next week – my first – a holland lop under 4 lbs. is there a general rule of thumb for what size litter box to try? I want it large enough to encourage good litter habits (to my knowledge he is my litter trained but is 1yeat old so I am hoping he picks up quickly) but not so large that it takes up too much space in xpen. Is it okay to start with a small
box? I was going to get a regular cat box as opposed to a special rabbit litter box.

A regular cat box is a good idea! I say the larger the better because you can either put hay IN the litterbox at one end to munch on, or suspend the hay OVER the litterbox so the extra bits fall inside. I’m not in the same room as the pen right now, but I can measure what we have in a little while. We actually use two large cat litterboxes because we have two buns.

Another nice thing is that buns tend to use the same corner or side of the litterbox to pee in. My buns only pee along the back side. We can then rotate the litterbox 180 degrees (and get an extra day out of the box if needed), because the “front edge” becomes the “back edge”.

So, going to the store, I would try to get the biggest you can. People try to get a small box and then end up having to go and get a larger one anyways. A litterbox is never wasted space.

I measured our boxes. Each box is 19×14, and like I said, we have two that size side-by-side.

My bun is the same she pees in one corner but i recommend getting one with quite high sides so its deep as i find she likes to dig and it keeps the mess down
