What breed is my bunny??

I got Binny from a friend who had an opps litter, and she didn’t know what breed he was.  I have looked at different breeds and i think from the pictures he may be an amercian rabbit? Not sure .. anyone have any ideas?  When we first got him he started off pure white, and after a few sheds he has gray hairs.  He weighs about 7 or 8 pounds.

Oh it’s been forever since I’ve hear that term! I’ve heard Heinz 57 used to describe a mixed breed dog so I imagine it’s being used in the same context.

I think he’s the 100% adorable breed. (not helpful I know)

Means hes a mutt Not an American, they are a larger breed.

His coloring look kind of “frosted pearl” to me if that interests you at all. I have a rabbit that I think is also frosted pearl colored. Binny might be a little darker than my bunny but it could also be the lighting.

Your bunny is adorable MoveDiagonally! he may be a mixed breed, because i can not find a rabbit that looks quite like him. I saw a Chinchilla rabbit on here and they look like Binny a lot. But they are a little darker than him.

Chinchillas are also a large breed, your little love is a small/medium breed. The coloring can range across many breeds, especially when you start to mix them. I’d focus more on ear and head shape, and body shape as well as weight. There really isn’t anything that specifically resembles your fluffy bun, he’s got the head of a lop but the ears of an uppy ear, it could be a mix of 4 or more buns

Well he is pretty big, he may be heavier than 8 pounds. I have not weighed him yet, and have not had money for a vet visit since me and my boyfriend are both unemployed at the moment. But i already have a vet lined up, just need the money. He probably is a mix breed.

I am not with him right now, he stays at my boyfriends house. So I see him every other day

I thought he was a normal size until I brought my dwarf home and he was the size of Binny’s head, but I know dwarf are small but I also got the runt or the litter and Binny was the runt of his litter also.

He looks like he is smaller than my Monty who is 9-10lbs but I can’t be sure.

If I may offer some unsolicited advice about his habitat. That brand at it’s largest size cage is : 30” x 18” x 16” which would be about 3.7 sq ft. The recommended MINIMUM for a single rabbit is 4′ X 2′ which is 8 sq ft. Are you able to upgrade his habitat in the near future? It’s really much too small for him.

Another tip is to remove the bedding from the cage and offer him a litter box instead. Bedding on the floor confuses a rabbit (they think the whole area is a litter box) and makes it harder to litter box train a rabbit. The third thing I noticed are the wood shavings, what kind are they? Cedar and Pine shavings, unless kiln dried, can cause respiratory issues in rabbits (The oils and fumes are bad for them to inhale).

Yes i know his cage is very small, but we only keep him in there at night time. I found out about the grid cages today, and told my boyfriend about them. We probably won’t make one of those until we get a house (which will be in a couple of months).

I use fine cut pine shaving because i heard that cedar was bad for their breathing.

He usually goes in one spot in the far corner but has stray poop sometimes. I wanted to get him a litter box but since his cage is small I wanted to wait until I could build a bigger one.

Also what kind of litter should i use in a litter box? Because i may get one for my new dwarf since she is so little compared to her cage.

Pine shavings aren’t good for them either unless they are kiln dried.

I use Untreated Wood Stove Pellets (they are kiln dried which gets rid of the dangerous oils/fumes). They are really cheap and effective but generally only available in the winter. FelinePine, EquinePine, and Dry Den are the same thing but packaged for animals. At my local feed store they are about $5 dollars for 50lbs. Another popular option is Carefresh (there is an off brand at walmart that is cheaper). And another one I’ve heard good things about is Yesterday’s News which is recycled newspaper.

What about an X-Pen until you can build him a condo? They are really useful so even if you go with a NIC later it wouldn’t be a wasteful purchase. Even for night time it’s really small :/. For condos you’ll want to plan for at least a 3 grid X 2 grid (the panels are 14″ each) as that would give you the minimum for one rabbit.

I bought mine from a local feed store and they were about $40 dollars. If you do any Amazon shopping you can sometimes get a good deal that way. I would suggest looking locally first (pet shops, feed stores). I’ve heard good things about ordering from Dr Foster and Smith as well.

If your rabbit is a jump/climber you’ll want to go with the tallest available which is about 4′ but if he’s not as inclined to escape/climb them anything 30″+ should be fine.

Edit: I just saw your post about finding one! I don’t do a lot of Ebay shopping but a pen like that would work out fine.

Do you think since he is not litter trained, that he will pee all over the blankets that i put in the xpen? Because sometimes when he gets on the couch or bed, he pees and poops. He poops a lot running around the house but i shop vac it up everyday.

He might have some accidents since he’s not litter trained. Do you have some old towels? I might buys a cheap plastic shower curtain to protect any carpet or anything and then cover it with old towels until he gets more reliable with a litter box.

Most bunnies choose where they like to go potty the most and that’s usually a good place to place a litter box. If he has an accident try to soak up some with a paper towel and place it in the box (the smell will encourage him to go in the box). Stray poop can also be scooped up and placed in the box to reinforce habits.

You could also keep his cage set up with litter in the bottom of it (like it is now) and just have him use it like a giant litter box (leave the cage open into the x – pen).

You might be surprised how quick he picks up using a litter box. It looks like he uses one corner of his night cage currently, so he seems to have neat habits.

He is cute! It’s an amazing change from baby to adult.
He looks a bit like a Lop cross Rex but he could be anything really. Can you get photos of the parents from your friend?

She recently moved so i’m not even sure she has her bunnies anymore. But when i picked Binny up his parents were white and looked exactly like he does now. So they may have been mixed also?

Here is a picture of his mom a year ago, her name is Daisy.  But Binny is much bigger than that, and has a more pointy nose.

I actually purchased mine from our local rescue. They sell them mainly for dogs and it worked out perfectly. My 36″ one only costs us $40 whereas we had bought another one from a pet store for $80 before that one!
