I posted a few days ago that my bunny was sick with giardia two weeks ago. He was treated for it with flagyl and then tested negative for it when he was done with the treatment. He had really bad diarrhea and wouldn’t eat or drink so the vet prescribed some Albon for him. He got better for a few days but then he went downhill again and didn’t want to eat or drink and had runny poo. He was grinding his teeth none stop for 24 hours so I called back and he prescribed more Albon with penacur suspension (sp?) now he’s doing a bit better his poo is itty bitty little wet balls and he eats a bit of Timothy hay and is drinking water like crazy. He doesn’t like his pellets and hasn’t touched them since the day before he became sick (we switched him to new food that is what irritated his stomach and that’s when we found out about the giardia) he mostly wants his romaine lettuce and dill but I know that won’t help his runny stool. What else can I give him? I want him to gain weight because he is literally skin and bones.

On a heavier note if this treatment doesn’t work we might have to consider putting him down. He’s been suffering for more than two weeks and I don’t want to see him like this anymore.

It won’t hurt him to have those veggies and it probably will help. I would allow him to have those – they are not the cause of runny stool!

Have you discussed your bunny’s diet with his vet? You may want to start him on Critical Care. That will give him a lot of nutrients and put some weight back on him. I would let him have any of the veggies that he is used to eating. You might also try some different hay, such as orchard grass.

I hope that he will start eating and get better soon.

Critical Care is a great suggestion – definitely ask your vet about it. I lean toward giving him what he prefers, so he eats, so the hay and greens he likes are good. Pellets are not a main stay of food, just more of a supplement. So if he likes his lettuces, green leaf is gentle, as is parsley. Orchard grass is a good suggestion as well. You want to keep him fed and comfortable, but he’s not back to normal so a normal diet may not be possible at this time.
