My bunny had giardia almost two weeks ago. He was treated for it and now it’s gone. The vet gave him some medication to slow down the runny stools and help harden them and now they’re wet and clumpy. He has lost 50% of his weight he’s skin and bones. He doesn’t want his pellets or oats he’s eating his Timothy hay and the vet said it was ok to give him parsley and he eats that and the occasional small banana slice. He’s drinking water fine but I don’t know what to do to help him gain the weight back and make his stools hard again. Can someone help?

Did the vet recheck his stool? I have had a rabbit who was diagnosed with giardia at one time as well and while my vet was very savvy I’m not entirely sure she was correct about this particular problem. We sent the stool out later which was continually gooey and runny and it came back negative – initially she looked at the fecal under a microscope herself.

          How old is your rabbit?

He’s about to be five months. We already took a second sample and he tested negative for it. He said its going to take awhile for him to gain the weight back but before he ate Timothy hay all day and had his veggies once a day and pellets twice a day. And the poop isn’t fully hard. He just finished his last dose of medication the harden his stool.

Did she check for Coccidia? That is very common in young rabbits.

What medication did you give him for the Giardia?

I would have his stool rechecked then to see if you need to continue medication at this point. You may want to ask if they can send the stool to an outside lab that can test for giardia and coccidia. However I know that both those medications are what you would normally take for either one of these concerns (giardia and coccidia).

That would be first since you are seeing a vet for this.

Also talk to the vet about trying more veggies since he won’t eat his pellets. Oats aren’t a good idea anyway as they are starches/carbs and that can cause runny poops as well so it’s probably best he is not eating this.

I just got in contact with the vets office but I am waiting for a call back he’s grinding his teeth really loudly and will not stop. He looks miserable.

That’s not good – hopefully you will hear from the vet soon.

How is your bunny doing now?

I’ve never dealt with giardia in rabbits but my Mom’s Westie had it and I know it can be extremely stubborn and recurring. I ditto Sarita with having the fecal test re-done.

He’s still not better he was given another dose of Albon for 10 days and penacur for 5. Now he has sticky poop and it comes out in round soft balls or long poops. He is still stick skinny but now he’s eating tons of hay and rabbit pellets and drinking water. He vet said to buy rabbit probiotic but no one around here carries it so I had to order it over amazon and it will get here within the next week.
