With some expierimentation  I’ve come to realize Monty, Helo, and Inara (My E Lops) prefer a bowl to a water bottle. They still drink from the bottle but they drink easier and more often from a bowl. The issue is they get their ears in it. The only bowl I found that they don’t get thier ears in is too small to realistically hold enough water for them throughout the day.

I’ve thought about finding something I can attach to their cages as the slight elevation might help. But they all yank, move, and flip things like that.

        Any ideas?

I have used and liked these crocks:

          http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm

You want the largest size.  One of the cons about this particular product is the plastic will cloud eventually (especially from the diswasher) but I’ve not found that takes away from the integrity of the plastic.  Also you have to be careful not to screw it too tightly – done that before too and it was a major problem.

Another thing you could consider is to pull their ears up in a scrunchy – I’ve heard of English Lop owners doing this too, not entirely sure how they do it though, but it may be worth trying as well to see if it works and doesn’t bother them – probably would take away from their looks but might help with this problem.

            Thanks for the rec!

I hadn’t heard about using a scrunchy. I’ll have to look into it and see if they would tolerate such a thing from me

I think I found something Monty can use, he had less water/ear trouble because his head is long enough that they don’t fall right in front of his face all the time (or he does the fabio flip, both ears on one side). The babies however, where their face is so goes their ears and feet.

A thing that sprang to mind that could work is a crock elevated on a metal stand. Like this: Bunny models are Kay and Winston (L – R).

Only problem is if they tend to flip things or move stuff about with their noses. You’d want something pretty sturdy as they’re going to be big bunnehs!

Sally is a mini lop and she gets her ears wet too but prefers the water bowl. As long as it doesn’t risk any illness of having the tip of her ears wet frequently I haven’t worried about it lol Heck, she even puts her feet in the water bowl and they are crocks that are raised off the floor!

My bun gets her ears in the crock and she doesn’t seem to mind. She’ll lie next to the bowl and float her ear in it! But, if you are concerned about that, why don’t you get the small bowl you mentioned, but get a few of them? I have three crocks going at once because A) they drink more than one bowl per day B) they inevitably knock at least one over or contaminate it with hay.

Jersey – I really like those and think it might be a good solution. I think I’ve seen one in storage at my Grandmother’s so I wouldn’t have to buy one to try it out.

Meggo and NBO – Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s particularly bad for them to have wet ears on a regular basis, I’ve just always heard “keep your bun as dry as possible”. Most resources that I’ve found online deal more with outside EL’s and they talk about wet ears leading to frostbite but inside (and in the spring/summer) that’s probably not a concern. It might actually help keep them cooler.

I do now the EL’s are prone to ear infections but I’m not sure if wet ears is a factor in that at all.

Maybe I don’t need to worry about it at all!

Cool! The dutch bunny’s front paws are in the crock. Maybe you could build a small shelf for the water bowls?

                             Like this:

The shelf in the middle. Or you could just put a normal grid and put water bowls on it.
