I am fostering a mini rex who had a (surprise) litter of babies 2 weeks ago. Her breathing has always seemed to be more rapid than my own buns. I am not sure if this is because when I got her she was pregnant and now she is nursing, so their breathing is normally higher during both or not. This is only the second mom I have fostered and I do not recall her breathing this quickly. Here is a video of her – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE5hSh_lk5g If you listen closely you can hear her breathing (through her nose. I have not seem her gasping). She is what I call a “sniffy” bun. When she hops over to see me, you can hear her sniffing.

She also has been sneezing some. I have not seen any discharge and her appetite is great as is her activity level. Anyone have a bunny who sneezes randomly throughout the day? Sometimes she will sneeze 5 or more times in a row. I did email my vet and she said unless she gets worse, she wants to wait until her babies are bit older before she sees her.

          That does seem quite fast.

Have you mentioned it to the rescue that you are fostering for?

I think it looks fine to me. Could be that you notice it more when she is resting and the fact that she is a rex and isn’t full of fur.

Sneezing – hard to know but I wouldn’t worry to much if her appetite is fine.

My buns breath like this when they are too warm from running around and such. What’s the temp in your house?

Do you have an idea of her age?

Did she have a health check when she came to the rescue?

I wasn’t able to view the video but I’m wondering if she is just more of an anxious rabbit?

NewBunny~ I keep my house around 77-78. I also run a ceiling fan in her room and she has tile to lay on.

Jersey~ No idea on her age. I guessed around 1-2 years. I picked her up from the shelter and she was scheduled for a check up and spay when I discovered she was pregnant. We opted to hold off on her appt (and her spay, obviously) until after her babies were born and a bit bigger. She is not showing any sign of feeling poorly. She zooms, binkies and is eating me out of house and home.

I agree with NBO – I wouldn’t be concerned either.

Now that the babies are born and they’ll become more independant in the next few weeks. So you’ll be able to follow up with a health check for her.
It will at least give you peace of mind.

ETA: I was just able to view the video. What a beautiful girl!!!  It is pretty rapid breathing and reminds me of Rumball when he’s been upset (He’s a “no-touchie” bunny 98% of the time) or when he’s cooling down. He breathes like that until he’s calmed down.

The dutched marked baby is my fav colour in that pattern. Such a soft dove grey.  <3  Are they rexes too or a cross breed?
