So me and Barney are moving!! To a much nicer place in a house (hopefully), so i was wondering what kind of low odor alternatives are there to sawdust?  I want our new landlord to think Barney is a fresh as flowers angel The sawdust is also driving me nuts because it gets EVERYWHERE!!! So something that doesnt get trailed around in Barney’s long fur, and doesnt hold odours too much would be perfect

        Thanks guys!

I use Equine bedding (basically Wood Stove Pellets). I clean out their boxes every day – every other day and it smells like wood for the most part.

          Congrats on your new place

Wood pellets definitely sound like a good idea, wouldnt get stuck in his fur like sawdust does! He’s so dopey, he rolls around in it!
            Thanks for the reply x

Sawdust is not a good choice for bedding. I use Yesterdays News and my bunnies have no odor at all. I change their litterboxes usually every second day.

Yesterday’s News and wood stove pellets work well.

Hmmm, I was going to say CareFresh (we use that and we LOVE it) but we have to brush the Lions every day because it gets stuck in their long hair on their butts every once in awhile.

Carefresh is the best! There’s no odor and it absorbs urine really well.

I have never used Yesterday’s News but CareFresh definitely prevents odor. There is also another product, I do not remember the name–I got it from a Canadian chain petstore that has moved into the US; it is a finer white substance and absorbs the odor even more so the CareFresh lasts a little longer.

On a more practical level–there are a number of types of wood products you DEFINITELY DO NOT WANT TO USE WITH YOUR RABBIT–they contain resinous oils that can damage the rabbits lungs. DO NOT USE CEDAR! If you must use wood, use kiln-dryed Aspen–that is the only one I know not to contain resinous substances. I did not appreciate this for a number of years until I had older buns and they breathed far more easily with either paper litter or even cloth towels.

A buck can have quite a musky smell–neutering will reduce the odor in his urine (Flemish bucks have the WORST smelling urine; you can’t keep those in a house without neutering ’em! Whew! Lol! I have to laugh at my boys).

Also, a bowl or pan of vinegar in the room tends to take noxious odors out of the air as does regularly airing a room.

ENJOY the Move! I hope it goes easily (moving can be such a hassle!)

While there are definitely some wood options to avoid. Untreated wood stove pellets are kiln dried and are safe to use (FelinePine, Dry Den, Equine Pine, etc…). Kiln drying removes the dangerous oils/fumes.

I use horse stall bedding (pine pellets). I personally like the smell of the pine and it absorbs urine and smell SOOOOO well and it’s cheap at a feed store! =D

Have you ever tried Eco paper bedding? It is a lot more affordable than care fresh, doesn’t get stuck in fur like care fresh and is not only absorbent, I have been blown away by how order absorbing it is too. I haven’t tried yesterdays news, so I can’t compare those two.

I find that aspen pellets -not shavings (like aspen supreme) are the best for odor control. However, it can be harder to find it and it is more expensive, so during tighter times, I will mix it with Yesterdays News and that works well. Also, I like mixing it because it smells less “woody”. It’s not that I find the wood smell offensive, but I do prefer a more mild wood smell.
