         Hi

thismorning I fed shamus and peach like normalnandnthey where both fine. I left them to go have breakfast and came back about 45 mins latter I opened the door and startled shamus and he ran and his in the corner this is very unusual and then he went in his cage and when I moved he ran around like I was going to get him even though all I did was stand up. I offered him a craisin and he took it very timidly and now he is hunched in the corner looking very worried?

I have no idea what has triggered this odd behaviour usually he is the brave bun and not skittish at all.

Have you checked for evidence of destruction ? It could be a guilty conscience
Otherwise how is the pee poop situation. That is always a good indicator to start with.
Has there been any unusual noise around your area or road works that could be causing vibrations ?
Also any personal changes obviously going into the colder weather your clothes will be getting heavier, maybe they have a scent on them from storage ?
I’d rule out any health issues then look at environmental changes if he continues to cower.

The other thing I wanted to ask is if the hay mite problem has cuased you any difficulties with hay supply on your side of the river. The person who supplies the majority of the pet stores up here has no stock remaining and is looking for a new grower due to the last few batches being infested. I have managed to get a bale from Stock Feeders but I was curious if you were experiencing problems too.

Hi thanks for answering so quick Roberta he seems to be fine now so maybe he heard something I didn’t. He has ever really thumped before so when he was just sitting there thumping I was very confused. Ill keep an eye on him at the moment he is just stretched our relaxing like normal. They are odd little creatures sometimes :p

I haven’t heard anything about hay mites down here but I use hay that my mum usually buys in bulk for the horses at the moment we have 6 huge round roles of often hay. I haven’t bought any from the pet store in a few weeks but last time it seemed fine.

They are all little Drama Queens sometimes… Mine had an abolsute hissy fit over a Native Rat on the other side of the window. You would have thought it was 100 times bigger and in the room with them. This evil vicious Native Rat was all of 3 inches long and so terrified it couldn’t figure out how to get down.

The mites don’t seem to be contaminating the horse hay crops thankfully so it might be isolated to one area. Lets hope so, I am covered in bites from a mildy contaminated bag of hay. They have had to close down their warehouse and fumigate and two of the suppliers staff ended up in hospital from the severity of the bites/stings they received (secondary infection and celulitis)
