I’m getting either a Holland Lop or Mini Lop rabbit, and after a lot of thinking, planning, and some help from a very nice member on here, I think I’ve come up with a really good cage, but I’m not entirely sure, so I would love some imput.

My plan is to buy a 48” high X-Pen and turn it into a cage. (I considered NIC cubes – and I really mean no offense towards anyone who has a NIC condo – but I honestly do not care for the appearance of them.)

So I’m going to buld a wooden base with a floor and 3-4 inch tall wooden sides in an attempt to protect my new carpets from any kind of mess.

Then I’m going to add a 2nd level (each level will be 4′ x 4′ and 24” high) using wooden dowels and zip ties to support the level, along with a ramp.

And finally, I’m going to add a top to the enclosure to prevent any escapees.

This is kind of my ‘rough draft’, and I’m looking for ways to improve it, which is why I came here. In total, the cage will be about 32 square feet for 1 (maybe 2, I’m not sure yet) rabbit(s), and I plan on giving them about 8-10 hours of supervised exercise time daily.

Also, if anyone could tell me roughly how tall Mini Lops AND Holland Lops are when they stand on their hind legs, I would be very greatful.

So that’s all. Thanks in advance for reading/replying.

          This is sounding really wonderful.

I would say that with that much time out they might not need a second level, but that is a preference. I used 2″ borders for my x-pen and 1″ for my condo and both kept in any mess so you might not need 3-4″, but again that’s a preference! 24″ should be plenty space for your bunnies to periscope (stand on hind legs). I have some bigger bunnies and they can stand in 24″.

One thing about having a base is that the pen can’t really be minimized but if you have 4′ by 4; to dedicate to the bunnies that’s not an issue. I have no experience with securing levels in an x-pen though so I hope someone else chimes in with some tips!

I’m so excited for you new buns! It sounds like you’re going to be a great bun mom.

This is the pen I keep my bonded pair in:

2″ border and vinyl tile for the flooring. They are usually in a different room with carpet. I was cleaning out the bunny room at the time of the pic.

Oh! I forgot to include, that when you assemble any kind of base or levels out of wood that screws are a good choice (instead of nails). It allows you to replace parts without too much trouble later.

Thanks! I’ll make sure to do that.
