         Hi All,

My entire family is going on a weekend camping trip a few hours away.  My regular animal care taker is busy and my family will all be on this trip so nobody is available to take care of Winston.

The trip was only supposed to be Friday through Sunday, but we agreed to come home Saturday so he will only be without direct care for 24 hours and won’t really miss a feeding.  The temperature isn’t crazy so that won’t be a worry. Winston is pretty mellow- he ate in the crate on his way home from his neuter, LOL.  Still…. leaving him the first time worries me.

My problem…. I am worried about not making it back home on time.  Which has never happened but sometimes things do happen…. So, I am trying to plan for being away from him for a worse case scenario of 2 days

We were planning on leaving his x-pen up for him full time- so he will have his 2.5 x 4 foot bilevel cage and roughly a 4×6 exercise area. I plan on placing a second litter tray in the expen filled with hay- his litter trays are huge easily bigger than 20×30.  Plus adding a second water bottle… so he would have 2 water bottles and his bowl of water.

He has been eating 1/4 c. of pellets once a day- Friday when we leave I plan on giving him his salad and 1/2 c of pellets. There will be ample hay between the two litter boxes, plus 3 sources of water.

        Any other ideas?

Again, I am planning on being home Saturday…. but, I admit it. I am worried about the little dude and “what if” we didn’t make it home.

        Thank you!

        An overly worried rabbit mom.

It’s excellent to plan! We had a member away with a storm/disaster type thing happened and she was gone for much longer than anticipated!

I would proof a bit in case he gets out-say unplug the TV and stuff, so if he did escape he couldn’t hurt himself chewing cords or fall down stairs. And that said, maybe put food and water out of the pen, in case he escapes but can’t back in!

Three sources of water is good-make sure they are a bit apart so if one spills it doesn’t knock another one. I’d put out LOTS hay because you can’t go wrong. Maybe leave a radio on for company for him, on quiet, in another room.

If your going to be OCD like me…you could go as far as hiding a key (if you can hide it safely and your not worried about that kind of thing-I put one in the BBQ…or you could leave one with someone you trust…) and then if you were stuck somewhere you could call anyone and tell them where the key is (or who has it) to get in and check.

24 hours isn’t bad, especially if he’s not had issues before, but planning for more is great!

          Have a fun trip!
