Are they safe? We have peppermint, chocolate mint, and grapefruit mint on our patio and I was wondering if they were safe for bunnies to have as a special treat when a harvest time comes.

Grapefruit mint is a cultivar of Peppermint so it should be alright.

            Chocolate mint sounds delicious!

I wrote to the email link on the HRS site asking about herbs (and vegetables) and received an answer from Dana Crimple (hope I’m spelling her name correctly). Later I saw articles referenced on this forum by someone of the same name, so I’m presuming it is the same person, and she would appear to be a well known rabbit vet. She said All types of mints are safe with the one exception of penny royal. They are actually greens and can be fed daily as part of the regular greens diet.

I’m growing three kinds and will dry them too. Surprisingly my two think dried raspberry leaves one of the best treats ever invented, … wish I had more.

Dana Krempels is not a vet – I just want to make that clear – she is an excellent excellent resource though and has tons of experience. She is an HRS Chapter Manager and is a Professor of Biology at the University of Miami so she has a Ph.d.

Thank you! I tried googling grapefruit mint for buns and wasn’t able to find anything. My porch smells so good with all this mint!

I will avoid the peppermint because I don’t know if its penny royal or not :/

New Bunny Owner, peppermint is fine, that is the kind of mint that it is. Penny Royal is another specific kind of mint, … a breed in the mint family so to speak.

Just to help clarify, what most of us call “mint” is spearmint, catnip is another major mint, and there is a fifth one that is currently alluding me. (Peppermint and Penny Royal being the other two.) Then of course they’ve been crossing them and coming up with all these other flavours. I’m growing lime mint (hope they like it, does nothing for me) and I passed over pineapple mint when I was shopping. I’m not positive about their roots but I’d guess they are based in the spearmint family.

The one time I smelt penny royal I didn’t think it smelt very minty (or pleasant, I didn’t like it) and I’m sure you’d know if you chose to grow it.

                      Anyway, peppermint is fine.

I recall a lot of sites listing mint as safe, and literally writing it as “Mint (all varieties)” which would make me assume it’s okay. I’ve read the same about basil, and we feed like 3 different types of basil now. And of course, all is fine. That being said, if you’re unsure, then definitely don’t do it. Better safe than sorry.

I only feed whatever is just listed as “Mint” at the store. Hah, that’s all I can find, though. It looks like this:

Good to know!! I’d never even heard of all the different types until last fall when someone brought in chocolate mint that they had grown; had I known they were ok I would have brought some home

Penny Royal is most commonly used as a natural insecticide and was popular as a flea treatment for cats and dogs until it was found to cause seizures and death in many animals. All of the other mints are fine but Penny Royal should be avoided. I seem to remember it is actually a member of the Wort family rather than the mints but I would have to double check that. It varies from country to country.

Ok well I bought this peppermint at a Food Lion (grocery store) store. So does that mean it is most likely not penny royal? It smells really good too. But the leaves don’t look like the picture above. Only my grapefruit mint looks similar to the pic above.

Penny Royal is also used in cooking. I’ll see if I can find a pic. It is also used medicinally there is a caviot on some sites warning against use by pregnant women as it can induce miscarriage.

http://botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/p/pennyr23.html This link has a good description
http://www.hartnursery.co.za/autumn4.htm second image down on the left. It has smaller leaves than common mint.
