I went to feed our bunnies and noticed that Magic is laying under a shelf and not coming out to eat. This never happened before. I picked her up, and she is acting lethargic. Obviously something is wrong. I will take her to the vet. It is 5 AM here, and the vet office opens at 8AM. Should I try to give her some water meanwhile? What could possibly cause the rabbit to get sick. She is 1 year old.

Tummy rubs are a good start. Also can you tell if she has pooped and pee’d ?
Change her litter and give her some gentle tummy rubs.

I know she has pooped in the last 24 hours since I changed the litterbox. My daughter fed them 12 hours ago (they get fed twice a day in addition to unlimited hay). I just asked her now, and she is saying that Magic didnt come out to eat at that time either. I will try the tummy rubs now.

Do you have any simethicone? Baby gas drops… It helps to relieve bloat and sometimes gets things moving with a mild blockage.
These are all bridging treatments, get to the vet ASAP. If you can get her moving about that could also help.

Please keep us updated – hopefully you are at the vet now or on your way. Best thing is to keep her warm really until you can get her there.

Hope your bunny is doing better. Powder has had this happen once and Stickers twice, when they eat something that doesn’t agree with their tummies. I give them tummy massages and they usually start acting normal again after a few hours. But, if yours has been that way for over 12 hours, a vet is certainly a good idea!

                      Update on Magic.
I took her to the vet this morning. He took abdominal xray and said she has SEVERE intestinal blockage. He said her stomach is severely distended, and there is stool and gas in her intestins. She received subcutaneous hydration and antibiotics. They offered us to keep her for one day, but it was going to cost over $300, and the vet agreed to send her home with meds. We picked her up at 4pm, and she already started eating hay and drinking water. I am glad I didnt push oral fluids because as it turned out her stomach was so distended. The vet said it is because she was not receiving enough fiber in her diet. Although she always had unlimited amount of hay, he said rabbits often chose to eat pellets instead, and pellets do not provide enough fiber. Now she is not allowed to eat anything except for the hay and water for 1 week. She is also taking antibiotic to bring intestinal flora back to balance. I will post some more later, because I am on my break at work. Thank you everybody for your concern and support

I am so glad to hear that Magic seems like she is on the road to recovery. What a scare! Bunnies know how to do that well.

                        Keep us updated!

I’m glad Magic is feeling better. I’ve had similar illnesses with my bunnies and it’s very scary.
