Please help! I have no experience with bunnies/rabbits, and i have a problem. I have a bunny that I have kept inside for a year, with no issues. I just decided to make her an outside pet, and bought her this awesome big two story farm house, and also a new little baby bunny to have as a friend. Problem: I put her outside the other day to get her used to it, and when I brought the cage in, I noticed tons of black bugs crawling around her feces and food. I threw everything out, cleaned the cage really well, and now the bugs are back ( I had her outside again today). The bugs are obviously coming form outside; however, how do I keep them away? I read somewhere to mix peppermint oil with water, spray the bottom of the cage, make sure it dries, and then put new litter in it before letting the rabbit in, does this sound right? I hate bugs!!!!

My best advice – bring her back inside, that’s the best place for her.

I second Sarita…. Who knows what other bugs are about when you are not there.. Inside is best especially if that is what she is use to.

I third the others…Bunnies belong in the house.

I agree with everybody else, bring her back inside. There will always be bugs outside, there’s no way around it.

My bunnies live outside and I use a spray by Johnson’s to repell bugs and kill lice fleas and mites and its worked well for me! Just make sure the hutch is clean and empty for the day when you use it to prevent your pets from breathing it in and that it is used for rabbit hitches specifically. As always make sure the hutch is clean at all times ans remove uneaten food and soiled bedding (litter training is a must if you haven’t already). Hygiene is just as important for outdoor buns as they’ve a lot more exposed than indoor ones and therefore a lot more prone to keystroke ect
If all else fails bring the bun in, at least your mind will be at rest.

Lift the hutch off the floor if possible. Could you post a picture of it so I could see. Do you mean one of these, if so, they’re not really big enough for a rabbit or even a guinea pig.

Bunnies live longer and have less health issues when kept inside.

I agree with what most of everyone else has said, keep them inside.

i could voice my opinion,, but it would sound like adam sander’s puppy speech in billy madison.

I second third and fourth what the others have said. If she’s been inside that’s where she belongs. She’ll be healthier and have a better life inside.

I don’t understand why you would put her outside. Like you said, you had her in for a whole year with no issues at all. What the …… Why would you doom her with outdoor life after that? It’s almost like a slap in the face if you ask me. Like all other animals, bunnies live longer, healthier lives while indoors. They’re much less likely to get diseases, bug related illnesses or injuries (fly strike, seriously), and are safe of predators.

I think the bugs in the hutch are a clear idea of the life you’ve put your bunny into. It’s not even the worst that could happen. I would highly recommend reconsidering your actions.

If you had no issues at all when your bunny was inside, why did you decide to make her an outdoor bunny? Are there extenuating circumstances that don’t allow you to have her inside anymore? If so, you should definitely take hannaroo’s and bunnylova’s advice. Otherwise, bunnies are happier inside, and you won’t have to worry about all the pests.

As for the new little baby bunny friend, where did you get this bunny? Did he/she see a vet before you introduced them to each other? Are they living in the same space or apart? Perhaps the new bunny friend may have brought something with him, especially if he came from a breeder or a pet store.
