With the new cage, i added more water bottles and a hay feeder (before, i was just stacking it on a plate). The past two days i have noticed they are eating way less hay than before the feeder. I have tried to take it out and give them fresh hay, they have eaten some, so they know where it is and can access it with no problem; but they are eating maybe 1/4 the amount they were before. I used to have to give more hay at least three times a day, now, it seems it is always full (so i just make it “fresher”) I wonder if this should worry me? Or maybe they were eating too much before because they were bored and had nothing else to do (they are MUCH more active in this new cage)?

Should i go back to the plate? I don’t know if i should be worried or if this is normal. . .

Hay should be the biggest part of their diet. I’ve never heard of a bunny eating “too much” hay but not eating enough can cause issues.

A 75% reduction in hay consumption is pretty drastic so that would worry me. Maybe put a plate of hay down as well and see if they eat more again? Then you’ll know if the hay feeder is bothering them or something else.

How much did they eat before? They need to eat about the size of their body each day.

That sounds about what they ate. i use the smaller bags of timothy hay, and i would give them a “stack” at a time. . . about 3 or 4 times a day. The feeder holds two stacks. I filled it in the morning yesterday and they only ate half. I took it out and gave them fresh and they still didnt want it. So last night before bed i put it back o the plate but kept the feeder in there. this morning it was all gone, plate and feeder. So im not sure what was up with them, but i guess they are eating, and they are def still pooing. it was just strange.

Maybe the feeder smelt new/of other bunnies, depending on where you got it.
