         Hi guys!!

So Potter seems to have begun a new part of his daily habits that I am worried about.  He has begun chewing and then very violently pulling at this cage bars. His teeth and gums are very healthy right now and I am concerned this is going to irritate them.

I was wondering if anyone else’s bun does this or if you have any idea why he may be doing it:? It has just started in the past 48 hours.

        Thanks!

        Emma

Usually that means ‘LET me OUT of here!!!!” How much time does Potter get for playtime a day? If you are doing enough playtime, try to make a routine so Potter can anticipate when he gets to go out and play; If he has a routine he might stop asking (re: shaking the cage with his teeth) for out time. To stop it before it becomes a big habit, make sure you don’t let him out when he’s doing that. If you are going to let him out and he is doing that, just wait until he’s stopped for a few seconds and then let him out. You don’t want him learning that shaking with his teeth is the key to freedom

I’m going to echo one of the key points from above – do NOT just let him out to get him to stop. Whenever Java is doing something like this to get out or get something, I make sure that he gets it only after he’s stopped for sometime. Once you’ve given in even once – they realize that they can do this until you give in.

Lucy use to do that to the top of her cage when she was on the second level. Eventually I just covered it up with a cardboard box. I use to do what Eucalyptus does and not let her out until she stopped, otherwise she’ll start to think that every time she chews on the bars, someone will rush over and let her out.
