Has anyone ever had a cage that not directly sitting on the ground? Either on top of other things like a shelf or connected straight off the wall? I am trying to figure out a way to get my large c&c condo off the floor so I can put storage undernieth, while still keeping a good amount of space.

        Thanks!

I don’t think this is what you want to hear, but I’m writing it anyway as a warning. It’s a sad story, don’t read it if you’re sensitive:

A friend of mine kept her rabbit in cage on a desk-table, and one day when she’d opened the cage, the rabbit took a leap right out in the air and landed so badly on the floor that she broke her neck. She didn’t die instantly though, my friend wrapped her in a towel and ran her to the animal hospital, but she’d just made it through the doors when the bunny died. But even if she had got there quicker, there wouldn’t have been any way to fix a broken rabbit-neck. It was a much-loved family rabbit and at least she got to be 5 years old.

I have never heard of raising a condo but with guinea pig cages (so i’ve seen, I am not an expert with guinea pigs) they can use more NIC grids and build a shelf component under the condo. I wouldn’t make it too high though. My condo is on the floor and is two stories. It is great for one rabbit, which is what I keep in there now, but once they are all bonded they will have a much larger area. I am not really worried about my rabbit jumping from the second story of the condo. I leave the doors open sometimes and he never tries to jump out. Even when he knows I have treats. Different rabbits can cause different situations, though. Rabbits are daring animals at times. I know if I had my Valentine girl up there she would likely jump out but I don’t have her housed in there. Anyway, I think having a raised condo with storage below MIGHT work…Just depends on your rabbit. I’d be extra cautious, though.

Maybe you could put the storage on top, then they couldn’t jump off

Unless your buns have a ramp or steps leading down, it really is best for it to be on the floor so they can come and go as they please. It’s more stressful for them to pick them up every time they have to come out or go back in the cage. Storage on top of it, or somewhere else int he room would be better.

I’ve heard of putting a table over a nic cage, it makes it more enclosed too.

There’s a great article about a raised cage on rabbit.org. In it the person explains how she organized things with her rabbits living in large hutches (originally three cabinets she converted) and how she found the perfect bench for them to hop onto when entering or exiting their homes. Since she was unable to reach floor level without pain this was a way for her to care for and keep her rabbits, and still let them have freedom. I think it was called “Raised Beds”, … like a garden. It’s an article that does provoke alternative ideas on safe and happy rabbit housing.

Think a lot would depend on how high you are thinking of raising the condo, and what provision you would make to help them over the gap.

I have two baby buns that are currently in a stacking NIC condo. It was really to conserve space and keep them separated/unable to breed through a cage until they can get speutered. It looks like this:
                       photo Condo2_zps052ae910.jpg

So one of my bunny’s off the ground. This is temporary in the sense that I hope to bond them with my other bunnies and put a ramp in the condo at that point (attached to the other bunnies x pens).

what are you wanting to store in the same space? If it’s light enough you could always reverse it and use the top for storage and keep the bunny on the ground level of a condo.

I have my NIC condo on wheels. It makes it easier for cleaning so I can move it out of the way and clean behind it. I honestly found that it was easier to buy a small plastic storage drawer to hold my buns’ stuff. We had put stuff on top of it at first but the longer we’ve had them and when they started to multiple (we went from one to three ;p) we needed more. It may be easier to just put up a floating shelf above the NIC cube it that is what you’re looking for.
