What is the best kind of pellets that I should be feeding my bunny, and how much should he eat per day?

He likes to eat A LOT but I do not believe he is overweight. I am just curious as to which brand and specific type of pellets that are best for him?

Excel, Oxbow and allen and page. Roughly an egg cup a day is normal, but follow the instructions on the packet.

            Hey Buns!

My personal favorite is Oxbow. But the biggest no-no is anything that has mixes. Make sure the mix is ALL pellets and not mixed with those horrible little seeds, dried fruits, ect.

What is the age of your bun? And his weight?

If he’s under 6 months, you should be feeding him unlimited alfalfa pellets (Oxbow Young Rabbit) and if he’s over 6 months, he will need to be weaned down to whatever the standard is for his weight if he is on unlimited right now and will be getting (Oxbow Adult Rabbit). If over 6 months, he should be receiving about 1/4-1/2 cup pellets per 6 lbs. of body weight.

I feed Oxbow. Rascal and Valentines are about 6 pounds each so I give them 1/4 cup each a day. Marley is 3 pounds so I give him 1/8 cup a day. I split their pellets into morning and night. They get some in the morning and some at night.

I personally wouldn’t feed another brand, but I am sure there are other brands out there that are okay to feed. I would just stay away from anything with dried corn (can carry mold and other icky things), fruits, seeds, nuts…

Oxbow I believe is the best brand, but it can be expensive. I go to my feed store and they have 10 lb bag for about $18. I would pay more online because of shipping.

If you don’t know your bunnies weight I suggest you weigh him. You can only know how much to feed him based on his weight.

Ditto what Tanlover said about amounts.

I use Oxbow for all my bunnes.

He weighs about 10 lbs… I am going to go with Oxbow I think. This is what most people have recommended! I saw that there are different kinds depending on their weights, or just feeding them different amounts based on their weights so I will pay more attention to that. Thanks so much!

I’m now curious, is Martins’ not available in the States? I feed Martins’ for Adult Rabbits, I did look at the Oxbo but when I saw the fifth ingredient down was cane sugar and that there isn’t any sugar at all listed in my Martins’ there was No contest! But I’ve never seen a single reference to it on the forum so I wondered.

I’ve not seen Martin’s around. Here are the analysis from each website on both if anyone wants to see how they compare:

I too recommend Oxbow. They are about the healthiest small animal brand out there.
My two rabbits go absolutely crazy for pellet time and eat it all right away.

I don’t honestly know much about Martins pellets. Oxbow is usually considered the standard, at least in the United States.

Thank you, all! I went with the Oxbow Adult Rabbit

I also feed Oxbow. I fed Martin’s for a long while until I found a bag, non-expired, that was completely green with mold. I brought it back to the store and switched to Oxbow.

I feed bam Cunicomplete by Versele-Laga. It’s quite common in Sweden. It’s a bit more expensive than Oxbow but not a lot.

Tried giving him Oxbow BB because Oxbow is THE rabbit pellet par excellence, but he avoids it vigourously. He rather eats carpet than Oxbow. Now Yohio gets the Oxbow BB because I bought a rather large bag. He doesn’t devour it right away, but it’s all gone in the morning when I go check on him. I’m glad because I think he was malnutritioned when I found him.

Bam is not. He’s fat, so he can only have a tablespoon of his pellets/day. (They’re much “fluffier” than the oxbow so a tbsp isn’t much).
