If you have a rabbit that weighs 4-7 pounds, could you please take the poll?

EDIT: I meant to say month.

If your rabbit eats more than 16 pounds, could you please specify how much it eats in a comment?

A pound of a hay is a lot. It’s compressed and expands when opened. My two rabbits (4 pounds and 5.5 pounds) go through a 50 pound box about every 6 months, so divided out, that is approximately one pound per rabbit per week. There is, of course, some waste as well.

I can’t imagine a rabbit of any size eating too much more than that, let alone 16+ pounds of hay in a week. I don’t think that is physically possible.

Why are you asking in these specific amounts? What is your purpose in starting this poll?

I’m guessing your rabbit DOES NOT eat between 10-15 pounds of hay a week.  That’s an incredible amount.

If your rabbit eats more than 16 lbs of hay a week it’s not a rabbit, it’s a falsely labeled goat.

Erm. Well. My rabbits are 6lbs and 8lbs. Between them both, they eat a farm bale of hay (roughly 50lbs) every 2 months or so. There is a lot of waste though, they pick out what they like and trash the rest.

My 4 together go through 25ish every month… So roughly 6 pounds a week?

Beka27: she might not, I’ve no idea how much the bale of hay weighs so had to guess using info on the internet, anyway, she gets through a largish hay bale every 6 months or so, with left overs. She gets through a lot of grass too, I don’t know if that sort of counts, we haven’t had to mow the lawn for about a year because of my little lawn mower

Bunnylova, If we say a bale of hay is 40-50 pounds and your bunny goes through one every 6 months that would be 6.6-8.3 pounds a month or 1.65-2 pounds a week.

A bunny eating 16 pounds of hay a week would go through a 40-50 pound bale in less than a month.

Bunnylova123, I figured it was a US > UK conversion issue! If my buns each ate 10 pounds of hay a week I wouldn’t be able to buy food for us! Lol!

Colleen, there is usually a good amount of waste with hay too, so maybe that was figuring into your measurements? Lots of people use it in the litter box so it gets thrown out.

Okay thanks! The purpose was to figure out how much hay I would need to get. I found a 40-45ish pound bale of hay.

It takes my bun at least 3 months to finish a 1-kilo-bag of hay. 1 kilo is 2,2 pounds. My bun weighs 4,4 pounds (2,3 kg).

I still think 16 pounds of hay a week sounds like an impossible amout of hay for just one bunny. It would be like 35 litres of hay or more than 9 gallons. You’d need an extra room just to store the hay you need for a month!

40-45 pounds of hay would take my bun 5 years to finish and I don’t think hay should be stored for so many years, better to buy smaller packs more often. I buy organic hay in kilo-bags.

Sorry about the joke about the goat. It just seemed so preposterous with such a huge amount of hay for one little bunny!

Ok, she edited the poll to say month! That sounds more reasonable… lol!

As I stated, my two buns go through 50 pounds in 6 months, which is about 8 pounds a month, 4 pounds per bunny.

Mine don’t eat as much as some other buns, but some eat even less. It really varies. This is why the big farm bales of horse-quality, grass hay are SOOO nice. There is so much hay, you’re not running out every week and having to run to the store for a tiny bag.

Hay keeps a very, very long time, as long as it’s stored in a very dry, pest-free area. You don’t want to store it air-tight, hay needs to breathe.

It’s okay! I bet it was really hard to imagine any bunny eating 16 pounds of hay a week!

Well, I’d change my vote then if I could. 25 pounds a month for the 4 of them

I wish my buns went through hay as slowly as yours do, Beka!
