I have two questions, I note on here and various sites that buns should not have corn, my question is, does this include baby corn?  My bun really loves it and has had 2 baby corns with his dinner each night for the past few months, should I stop or is it okay because its soft?

Question 2 – I’m confused as to how much pellets to feed.  I use Burgess Excel “as recommended by your vet”, it’s a UK product and is just the plain pellet stuff, no M&M’s.  This brand is designed for juniors and dwarfs.  The packaging says for a dwarf between 1 – 1.5kg is between 40-60g per day.  My dwarf is 1.25kg so I give him 40g per day, but that is much more than the 1 egg-cup full that I’ve been reading as an appropriate quantity on this and other bun websites - what do I do.  Do I go with the quantity on the bag, or with the 1 egg cup advice given on here.  Help, really confused.

The quantity on the bag is generally more exact, the egg cup full is just an average amount, it wouldn’t be too bad for him to give an egg cup full, but use the one on the bag. I did a bit of research ( well, ok just typing it into google ) and baby corn isn’t generally recommended, but I think someone else would be able to give a better answer.

I’m going to go with no on the baby corn because it’s just immature corn and corn is not good for them.

Generally speaking, an adult rabbit should eat 1/4-1/2 cup of pellets per 6 pounds a day. So if you’re bunny is 1.25kg (2.7 pounds) that would be approx 30-60 grams (1/8 cup to 1/4 cup). So it sounds like you’ve been feeding the right amount.

If corn is not recommended, I would not give baby corn eigther. I agree with MoveDiagonally’s estimate for food quantity – sounds like you’re giving the right amount. Just make sure that he has plenty of hay at all times!

Corn is absolutely not recommended, baby or not. You might not see immediate effects, but it’s definitely going to do harm. Many people feel that it might be okay because corn is in … everything. It’s not.

Most sites will say it’s about 1/4 – 1/2 a cup of pellets per 6 lbs of bunny. I would highly recommend that you go with the lower end, and even lower if you are feeding a high variety of veggies. For a dwarf (2-3 lbs tops, correct?) I would recommend 1/8 – 1/4 of pellets at most, but this is just my personal advice. And I can’t make a definite statement without knowing its current diet anyway.

                Hope this helps!

Thanks guys, unfortunately I have no idea what a “cup” is, we don’t have that measurement in the uk ( I did not give Buckley any corn last night and he kind of looked at his veggie bowl, looked at me, looked at the veggie bowl and looked at me again with those huge brown eyes as if to say “where my corn Mum?”, sniffed his veggies and then walked away in disgust, but alas I shall stop giving him baby corn. He has been having it almost daily for at least the last 2 months and I have seen no ill-effects, so I’m not sure what difference in behaviour I’m going to see, but I will keep an eye on him and I hope he doesn’t have any ill effects from the poor diet I gave him. He easts his pellets (although not all of them) and he eats hay and some veggies, he’s quite a fussy eater. On the whole I would not say that he eats much of anything, unless he does his hay munching whilst I’m not looking (which is highly possible).

Thanks for all your advice x

A cup holds eight liquid ounces, or two hundred and fifty mls. A sort of regular coffee mug isn’t a bad approximation, a tea cup would be roughly half a cup.

                    Hope that might help!

If you look back at my response I put the recommended amounts in both cups and the measurements you described in your original post. We measure things weird in the US

                      Recap:
30-60 grams of pellets are recommended for your bunny’s size.

If you’re giving him 40 grams right now and he’s not eating them all you could try 30 grams a day
