I hope some of you guys can help me. About a month ago I got a 6 month old dwarf bun. She is usually super sweet and friendly, but i’ve been having a bunch of problems litter training her. She will pee in the litter box, and sometimes poo in there. But usually she just poos all over her cage. However when she is romping around my room she is usually pretty good about not going outisde of her cage, except IN MY BED! She has now pooped many times in my bed and peed twice. One time while in was in the bed and it got all over me! GROSS! I dont’ know what to do. I tried watching her and giving her a small treat when she does go in the box, but I can’t be with her all day. Also she will never go back into her habitat to go to the bathroom when she is roaming my room.

Also she is nipping. Not all the time just when she wants my attention or when she tries to burrow in my clothes. I tried walking away or when it gets really bad putting her back in her cage. But i just dont’ know what to do.

Any suggestions are welcomed! Thanks! M

        Mel.

I don’t really have advice. However, I’m pretty sure of the first question the more experienced members who try to help you will be asking so in the hopes of making it easier, … is she spayed?

Even without that information and my inexperience sounds to me as though she is marking your bed as Her territory. I’ve been peed on (by dogs and cats as well as rabbits) and I know how little fun it is, … one of the joys of loving and living with animals! And being in bed when it happens does add a certain something to the treat!

Buns tend to get pretty territorial around sexual maturity so if she isn’t already altered that should be your first step. After that if it is still an issue getting a cover for your bed that is less appealing to jump on or something to block the bun’s access to your bed. Beds are a pretty irresistible target for even some of the best litter trained rabbits. She just loves your bed so much she wants to claim it as her own.

For the nipping, what you’re doing sounds about right. I found that giving my bun a bit of a squirt with a water bottle deters him pretty quickly.

For the weeing in the bed, she’s probably marking her territory as Bwbedard said.
The erratic toilet behavior could be caused by going through puberty and not being spayed.

When I was toilet training mine, I read about putting a few litter trays around in places where they like to go to the toilet, and slowly narrowing it back down to just one litter tray in their habitat.

              Hope some of this helps!

Grey Dove, Bwbedard, and Shannon covered it!

If she isn’t spayed, which based on behavior sounds like she isn’t, that is your first step. She is old enough to be spayed at 6 months.

Other than that, you’ll have to block your bed and not let her up there. Some rabbits always mark on beds, some eventually grow out of the habit… but better to be safe and just not let her up.

From my experience so far, Lilly (our now 9 month mini-rex) has gone pee on the bed from time to time. We decided  just not let her around the bed. Her play space is the kitchen and living room, so we kind of avoid issues there.  She is not yet spayed, but from what I understand this does really help with the litter box problems.

With her nips, does she nip hard or agreesivly? Lilly tends to do light nips when she wants us to pet her more or move out of the way. I try and do a little squeel so she knows it hurts! I don’t think she realizes it hurts, and I have read that these little nips are how they communicate in with other bunnies in the wild.

Buns just love beds, don’t they?!

I don’t know what it is but when I had Thane in my bedroom he would always pee on my bed. ALWAYS. And he’s been neutered for about a year now.

                      Hey there –

Definitely sounds like you have a hormonal girl on your hands. Which means if she’s not spayed, she’s probably not going to stop any of their behaviors until she is.

If she IS spayed, for the nipping – try pushing her head down towards the floor when she nips. Not hard but just enough to show her “your top bunny”. It has worked rather well with my five. Shannon is right – sometimes the water bottle can help but be careful it doesn’t become a sort of game for her. I tried the squirt bottle when I was having problems with my babies chewing on the carpet and it turned into a game for them. They would get squirted, binky away, and then come directly back and do it again. LOL.

Buns are so cheeky aren’t they?! Thane does this too, does little head shakes and all! I swear he actually LIKES the water bottle lol.
