Hi everyone. I’m hoping someone would be able to shed some light on my bunny’s mystery poop. My hubby and I have noticed that Mr. President (our rabbit) has been pooping round, dark poop. It isn’t soft and when you crush it, the insides are a normal golden brown color but the outside is coated with a kind of wet, dark brown substance. His diet consists mostly of meadow hay with a few pellets every now and then and we don’t really feed him veggies. We’ve run out of pellets a few days ago so it’s been mainly hay nowadays. He’s eating and drinking normally so I don’t know what might be the problem.

Hmm. Is it smelly? He could be coating it with marking oils. I am concerned about his diet though. Hay is great fiber and for tooth grinding but doesn’t give all the nutrients a rabbit needs. Even in the wild they eat dandelions and other plants. Without pellets or veggies, he could become malnourished.

Hi Stickerbunny! Thanks for the reply. Yes, it’s actually quite smelly. He hasn’t been neutered yet, if that info helps. But we checked his litterbox again and the rest of his poop looks normal. It was only recently that we ran out of pellets, around 3 days or so and our supplier ran out of stock of the pellets we usually get for him. But we’re planning on going elsewhere to get his pellets within the week. As for veggies, we have given him basil from time to time before but, admittedly, not often enough. I’ll be giving him some later.

Why do you not feed veggies? Veggies is the second most important part of a rabbit’s diet.

My spayed female sometimes has poops that are more pungent, with a skunky odor. Not sure why this is. My buns poops also change colour depending on what they are eating, Timothy Hay makes them light brown while Orchard Grass makes them almost black.
