My bunny is a two year old n. male, white with black spots. His name is bun-bun and he’s my best buddy. He’s part of my family but I’m scared he’s sick and I don’t know if he’s having a belly ache all the time or not. He has soft yucky poop and it gets all over the house and him. I took him to the vet a few times and they said he appears to be fine and he weighs what he should. However they just give him the same antibiotic and I never get any answers, I don’t have a lot of money or else I would have his stool sample checked and all that. I love him but I’m at a lost here. I have stage five cancer and he’s been by my side through all of it. I wish I knew what to do to help him?!

          What is his diet?

His diet is high fiber oxbow pellets, botanical hay, fresh water, some rabbit treats from the pet store, and sometimes he eats grass from the backyard,

Were the vets you saw rabbit savvy? They certainly should have done more.

It could be several things. Without doing a stool sample there is really no way to know. My vet doesn’t charge very much for a stool sample. Have you inquired about a price?

Does he have any normal poops at all or is at mushy?

Could possibly be “cow poop” syndrome as he has the coloring, I’m not an expert on this but here is a link from Dana Krempels and one of our former Forum Leaders who had a rabbit with this problem:

In another thread you posted that you feed yogurt drops and granola bars…
                  https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/124211/afpg/3/Default.aspx

I give my bunny yogurt drops and granola bars for bunnies that they sell at the pet store. I hand feed him those and some veggies sometimes like carrots and such.

Neither of those are an appropriate treat for rabbits. Just because a pet store sells something for rabbits, does not mean it is the healthiest option. Yogurt is too high in sugar and granola/oats are too high in carbs. Both can (and probably are!) contributing to the poop issues he is having. I would stop giving those today.

You also said he gets carrots “sometimes”. Is he receiving a minimum of 2 cups of leafy green veggies every day, or just the occasional carrot?

I recommend you take a good look at his daily diet and modify it to mimic HRS guidelines. Keep it simple right now. Just a limited amount of quality timothy pellet (no more than a 1/4 cup per day!), lots of grass hay always available, and 2 cups of greens per day. No treats, no fruit, no oats, definitely no more yogurt drops! See if a solid diet helps.

Beka makes a good point – I did not see the post where you feed yogurt and granola bars – not a good choice for a rabbit. Definitely get him on a proper rabbit diet.

I just reread your post as well and I’m sorry you are going through stage five cancer – I am sending you strength and healing vibes and definitely an animal companion can bring you joy when you are feeling down.

                      Healing vibes from me too.

I too think your bunny’s problem has to do with the granola bars + yogurt drops. Pet-stores often sell idiotic stuff like anti-tick-pills with garlic for dogs, even though garlic is poison to dogs, you can’t trust them at all. When I gave my bunny bunny-muesli, which he LOVED, he got sticky and soft poop. When I stopped giving the muesli even piece by piece as treats, his stomach became fine in about a week and it has been since.

Yea Winston’s stomach is very fickle. Most treat or over feeding of pellets cause him to have yucky poops as well. If i cut back his diet of pellets and up the diet of hay and greens it usually sorts its self out.

Generally soft poops happen for the reverse reason diarrhea happens in people: soft poop happens when the food is taking TOO LONG to pass through the gut. Sometimes benebac is helpful with moving out accumulated hair that may be slowing digestion down; some people swear by fresh-squeezed pineapple juice (my rabbits always thought that was too acidic), and there’s always the vaseline petro-malt which can help, if it is indeed due to hair caught in the caecum slowing things down. . . . Just a thought.
