Hello, we have had princess ella for a week this Sunday, so I’m pretty new at this…. I read that she is suppose to be eating the cecotrropes, but I change her hutch out daily and there are A LOT of them left behind?? Then last night I noticed her leaving them around the house where as normally she just leaves the normal rabbit droppings that I don’t mind so much since they are so easy to just pluck up and throw in with the flowers… ( I should say I don’t mind the poop, the pee we are working on the litter box, but that’s another topic).. I’m just worried that maybe she is not eating the cecotropes as she is suppose to as I read this means she could be sick. She is only 11 weeks old, so I hope not???

Hi, Yes your bunny generally should be eating her cecotropes, and if you are seeing a lot around, it could be an indication that something needs to be adjusted in her diet. What kind of foods and what quantity does she get right now? It sounds like her regular poops are somewhat firm and dry if you can pick them up, so that is a good sign.

Here is the link to the House Rabbit Society guidelines for food for young bunnies, I would recommend reading this and see how what you are feeding lines up with these standards: http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html#babies

It has been awhile since I have had any baby bunnies in my house, but I think I recall them having some cecotropes left around – my older bunnies now don’t leave any anywhere as long as they are feeling OK. The fact that it is a LOT of them though makes me think that there might be something off on her diet, so check out the above information.

As long as they are not mushy or unformed it’s really okay. You may need to adjust her diet and it MAY cut down on cecals but it’s not necessarily the sign of a sick rabbit. BUT if you just acquired her and she is young then you NEED to get a vet appointment for a check over and a FECAL test to check for coccidia.
