Apollo is growing up, about 7-8 months old now! He was neutered at 5-6 months of age. I’ve left it now for a fair amount of time for his hormones to die down. He doesn’t poop ANYWHERE when out roaming the living kitchen dining area, but in his cage, he’ll poop all over the place. About 60% of the time it’s in his litter tray. Pee is 100% accurate in the tray. But ill always find at least 25 poops in his cage when it comes to cleaning the following day. My mum won’t let me look into other cage options till he’s perfectly clean. What do I do?! I can’t have him in that pet store cage forever!  I want the best for him!

        Regards,

        Bunnygirl

He may never be 100%. Sometimes increasing space actually improves litter habits, so I would ask to move ahead with the new housing plan ASAP.

Litter trained rabbits pee in the box 100% of the time, but some dropped poops are normal and don’t mean the rabbit isn’t litter trained. It’s unlikely you will ever get 100% poop in the box. A good goal is to have 90-95% in the box.

Your best friend is going to be a little $20 hand vac. Once or twice a day just suck up the stray poos. They’re dry and easily managed.

Maybe show her my reply? If she has more concerns about increasing his space, let us know.

Bunnygirl, you shared a picture a while back showing Apollo’s redecorating efforts in his cage. Lol
I noticed then that you had lined his cage floor with newspaper. Do you do that still? If so, try leaving the floor completely bare and see if that makes a difference.

What is your litter box situation? Is it big enough for him to lay down in? Do you put hay in it?

Ive tried putting nothing on the bottom of his cage, it made him get flaky feet, like the fur came off. It was weird. Since then, I changed to fleece. His litter tray is a high sided tray, with a sort of lip around the edge. In the tray, I put newspaper with lots of hay!

I suggested going ahead with the plans, and then she pointed out that we can’t find NIC cubes anywhere, and he may be able to push over a dog exercise pen. Thoughts?

Oh and his litter tray is big enough for him to lie in! He does frequently!

He can’t push over a dog xpen. They’re meant to contain dogs…. He’s smaller than a large breed dog, right?! Lol… ;o)

Are you planning on doing an xpen configured in a square, or are you going to incorporate his current cage and attach the xpen to that? Whichever option is fine. Make sure the xpen is a minimum height of 36 inches.

NIC condos are less sturdy than an xpen, and they’re usually a bit harder to get in and clean.
