My dear Chacha bun was diagnosed with fur mites today !! The vet gave her some revolution to fix the problem.

I have been cleaning my room, vacuuming up, washing my clothing in hot water, and Chacha’s blankets and dishes, etc.

When I spoke to the vet, she asked me if I got another bunny. I said no. I think I may have been me. I went to the shelter to donate hay and played with the bunnies there. I know that mites can stick to clothing and be transmitted from human to animal.

        My questions are:

Do I have to do anything for the carpet? I am vacuuming up.

How can I tell when the mites are gone? Right now, there are scabs on Chacha’s neck and one part is flaky, likely from where the vet took a skin scrape sample.

If there is anything else I should know, please let me know.

Mites can live for 2 weeks without a host, so you’ll have to do daily cleaning to make sure any and all eggs and larva/adults are taken care of. Toss any toys or such made of porous material, wood, willow, etc. that can hide eggs inside. Any other toys need to be bleached. Litter boxes too. You might want to be extra careful and clean the carpet too, vacuums may not get them all.

And also make sure that any time you handle another rabbit, to change cloths immediately after getting home and putting them straight into the laundry, especially if you have been to a shelter.

I would advise the shelter too in case they don’t realise yet and it spreads from one bun to all of them, so they can start treating.

Poor Chacha. And you. I’ve never dealt with mites but had a flea scare (only found one) but tore my house apart cleaning.

Did you change your clothes as soon as you got home from the rescue.

              ****Hugs to Chacha*****

What type of mites? My bun had Cheyletiella parasitovorax when I found him. I gave him permethrine spot on which was very effective (it’s not always recommended for use on rabbits, but much used in Sweden by breeders of show-rabbits, they always keep a bottle of the stuff.) I washed his rag-rugs and toys, the floor, etc with a chlorine-solution, all wooden boxes etc I put on the balcony for a few weeks because mites will die without a host in that time. This was more than a year ago and he’s not had any mites since.
