Hi there I was reading the rabbit USA magazine 2013 and saw an advertisement for the furminator brush http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produ…atid=23011 I was wondering if anybody has used it and does it really reduce shedding? I thought about getting it because my rabbit is an American sable and it seems like she sheds all the time and I have fur constantly in my house. thanks

I’ve heard mixed reviews here about the furminator. Negs seem to be a tendency to over-groom and leave patches or sore skin.
I doubt it prevents shedding, since bunnies basically shed 4 times a year, with some heavy sheds and some lighter ones.
A simple cat comb or brush, the stiffer bristle kind, used by you daily on your bunny will keep the shedding way down. Also, a mini-vac or a damp paper towel can really pick up a lot of loose fur in and around your habitat. It’s easier to deal with if you do it as daily or weekly maintenance with smaller amounts, rather than letting it build up, both on your bunny and in your home.

I personally just use a human brush – the black bristle old fashioned kind on Powder and a wet hand for Stickers (rex). Powder sheds year round, so theres no hope to keep his fur shedding down unless I shave him. lol Some people love their furminator though, but you have to be careful (I heard comb with it on its side to avoid skin injury).

I had a Furminator for my cat. That brush was AWESOME! Tons and tons of fur would come off with it and my cat loved being brushed with it. I don’t know about rabbits. I guess I would have thought their skin would be a little too sensitive for that.

I use a furminator on my rabbit. I bought it for my dog, she hates it though. But it is crazy efficient. Bam (rabbit) seems to like being furminated, but of course I have to take care not to scratch the skin. I think it’s good because it leaves less fur to be ingested and cause stomach-problems. This year’s spring moult has been extreme, I don’t know if it has to do with his neuter of if he just had a thicker winter-coat this year because of better care (last winter he was newly found by me and not in excellent condition fur-wise).

The Furminator will only take the loose hairs though, it does nothing when your rabbit isn’t moulting. My bun has normal hair, I don’t know what a Furminator would do to a more fluffy, fuzzy bunny with f ex mane and skirts. And since my (very sensitive) dog really really hates it, I guess some sensitive rabbits might hate it too.

I have a furminator, but I don’t really like it. The bunnies hate it and it doesn’t seem to get any more fur out than the hairbuster comb or slicker that I regularly use.

It won’t cut down on actual shedding, but it can remove the hair so it doesn’t end up all over your house. In my experience though, bunnies shed a lot from their tummies, which is an area most people don’t brush (at least mine won’t let me brush there) so they still end up shedding on everything no matter how well you brush out their backs.

I used the Furminator on my Mini-Rex. It was the only thing that really worked on him. But yes, you have to be very careful to be super gentle and not over-groom. Doesn’t reduce shedding but it helps get all the loose hair off. My bunnies hate it but they hate all grooming tools. I use it for my cats too.
