My husband just told me that he fed our bunny a walnut this morning. He didn’t know that she wasn’t supposed to have them. Should I call the vet, or do you think she will be OK? She is only 2 pounds.

Gosh this is my fear with my husband that when I’m gone he will think about being nice to one of the buns and feed them a “treat” lol

We have a rule that I do all the feedings! He doesn’t give them ANYTHING lol if he wants to be nice, he can pet them

Anyhoo, your bun should be fine. Just no more nuts in the future :p

Thank you! I knew they were on the “do-not-feed” list but wasn’t sure how concerned I should be about her eating one!

I know what you mean too.. I actually *thought* I was in charge of the bunny feedings! I guess my husband was just eating walnuts and looked over at her and thought he’d be “nice” and share. I’ve told him that there are many foods she can’t eat, but for some reason, he decided that walnuts must be on the good food list. He has promised never to feed her a walnut again.

I think the main concern with nuts is the high fat and starchy content.

I have seen “rabbit toys” with a peanut or walnut in the middle wrapped with apple or willow sticks. I want to shake my fists at the pet store but they wouldn’t really care lol

Walnuts aren’t poisonous to rabbit, but aren’t great to include in the diet either…she should be fine .

She’ll be fine as long as there is no allergy (and if there was, you’d know by now most likely). They are high protein and fat so they aren’t good to feed often, but one isn’t going to hurt her.

And the toys with the nuts in the middle you can just break a branch and take the nut out. Or, if your bun is being supervised, let them eat the toy then take the nut away when they’re done. All the willow balls here have a walnut in the middle, so dumb, but I just take it out and give them the ball.

Yep, the walnut won’t cause any harm. They are just really fattening, so that’s why they aren’t recommended. Don’t feel bad about your husband feeding the rabbit things that he shouldn’t. I know someone who had a rabbit and you would not believe the things her husband would sneak to the rabbit.

What is it with SOs wanting to over treat the pets? lol My boyfriend always sneaks extra craisins to the buns and he once tried to feed my bird avocado which is toxic to them and I had to slap his hand away.

Thanks, everybody. I appreciate the advice! I’ll remember to remove the peanut from the willow ball toys too. I actually haven’t bought her any of those ones yet, but it sounds like they would be a good item to try out! Juni really loves her tube that’s made out of dried Timothy Hay. She seems to enjoy ripping things to shreds, and it takes her several weeks to get through one of those tubes. She also loves the little willow sticks. My vet suggested that I prune a few twigs from an apple tree and give her some of the branches to chew on.

I am not sure why the SOs are sneaking the rabbits all the treats! It’s funny because my husband is so respectful about pretty much everything, but when he is sitting there eating grapes or something he knows she really likes, it’s like he becomes overwhelmed with a desire to sneak her one.. or two or three.
