Hi, I’m a new bunny mom and it is becoming winter in South Africa and i would like some advice on how to keep my little one warm.

I have started putting more hay in her cage as well as a towel to cuddle up to. This morning i took her out to play and noticed that her ears were very cold and got worried that this isn’t enough.

I do put a fleece blanket over her cage at night and during the very cold days.

Can anybody help with any other things i can do?

        Thanks

You can insulate cages using bubble wrap, and pet safe heat pads ( snuggle safe do one )aren’t that expensive. Try getting a cat or rabbit bed, rabbit beds do exist, there just aren’t many.

If you do consider getting bunny a husbun, that would probably help too, they could snuggle up together in cold weather.

I filled a hot water bottle (very hot water, boiled the kettle) and put it in a cardboard box stuffed with paper. The paper kept the heat longer, and the heat radiated out from the box which helped most of the cage. When my boy was really chilly he could cuddle against its side, or lie right on the box. Some times I also covered the box in hay which also kept its heat longer. Of course the box got munched on, an added bonus. That worked well for us.

He ate fabric so I couldn’t give him towels or beds (very frustrating!) but if I could something I would have done is heat massage rocks (though any clean river or bassalt rocks would work) give them a good boil, then tuck them under the bed, or wrap them well in a couple of towels. Same basic effect.
