Hello Everybody. Juni is a spunky little 2-pound lionhead/jersey wooly mix. She is a brave explorer, an acrobat, and an avid hand-licker. She is also the first “house rabbit” I have ever had. My husband and I were amazed that the books and websites we’d read turned out to be right, and that the litterbox training actually worked! She’s a sweet bun who sits on the couch by us (once she’s tired herself out by running all over the house and binkying through the living room, that is) and loves being petted. I’m still trying to decide whether we should get her a companion, now that she’s spayed. What do you think?
I am new to house rabbits, but I have always loved rabbits more than another other animal. When I was a kid, we had many of them. However, they were always kept outside, so we never got to know them that well. I had been hearing that rabbits could be kept indoors, so I started reading about them, and last summer, we brought baby Juni home. She is an “only child” since we don’t have any other pets or children.
Juni was spayed last week and still has a bit of swelling at the suture site, which her vet says is normal. I noticed that her litterbox habits went back to normal right away, but she is still just as wild and hyper as ever. I wonder if maybe that is just her nature! She also likes to sneak into the onion basket and eat the yellow peels off of our onions, and I still don’t know whether thats healthy!

Regarding the onion skins, a tiny nibble here and there is probably not harmful. She probably just enjoys the texture. Supposedly a tiny pinch of chives are okay as a rare snack; I’ve seen those on a few safe-to-eat lists online (dubious though they may be), but, as to any other type of onion-family plant…, no. Generally any kind of plant that comes from a bulb or corm should be avoided. Many of them are toxic to bunnies.
Glad to hear Juni is spayed and doing well. It sounds like you’d really like a second bunny.
There are quite a few resources here at BB to help you, if you decide to do that. I have a single bunny, and she seems more than happy being showered with all my love and attention. She has e. cuniculi, so she really shouldn’t have a bun companion anyway for health reasons, but even if she could, she would not be easy to bond to another bunny. It takes her ages to warm up to anyone, and after having her for two-plus years, she still either runs for the hills when she sees any of our other pets (cats and a dog), or charges after them in fury. So, I say, it depends on Juni’s personality and whether you are committed to making it work, etc. Maybe take her to meet some other bunnies and gauge her reaction; if she ignores any of them, then they will likely get along okay. You raise a good point about finding out whether Juni’s personality would be a good fit with another bunny or not. It sounds like your bunny is happy being an “only child” even aside from the health issues involved. I’m honestly not sure about Juni. She does take a while to warm up to human strangers, but once she gets to know them, she is pretty comfortable. I’m not sure how she would be around another pet of any kind since she is the only pet we have. The Humane Society won’t allow us to do “meet and greets” anymore for health reasons, so it’s hard to know how she would react! It’s mainly that I just think of her being home alone while we are at work and in her cage alone at night. I think she would be happier with another bunny, but I don’t actually know that for sure.
Thanks also for the tip on the onion peels. I don’t know why, but she acts like they are the most delicious things she has ever tasted. I moved the onions up far out of her reach, but the other day I turned my back for a few minutes, and when my eyes landed on her, I saw that she was munching away on an onion peel! WHERE she got it, I don’t know! It’s a relief that maybe a little bite here and there won’t be the end of the world.

yes, I do think you should get her a friend, another bun can interact with her constantly, and it means she won’t get bor
