My rabbit (male, neutered, about 3 years old) used to be excellent with his litter habits. Never had any accidents with him or anything.

He does still use his litter, but he has been doing his business out of the litter when he’s in his shed for a few times now, which seems very unusual for him.  He will do it right next to the litter. I moved the litter to that spot thinking maybe he decided he like that spot better now (hah), but even then, he does it somewhere else.

I keep his litter clean, so a dirty litter can’t be the reason he’s peeing just outside of it.

The only thing that comes to mind for this change is that I have changed his diet. Could that be it?

I used to give him about one cup of pellets everyday (recently realized that was too much for his size!). He would also have hay and other vegetables. Now, I only give him about 1/2 cup of pellets at around 9 at night. He has his hay, and now I give him more vegetables than I used to.

I notice that he always acts hungry, even with the vegetables and hay, which he does eat, but I think he wants his pellets, and that 1/2 I give him now doesn’t last him the entire day like the one cup did.

So could his change in litter habbits be because of the change in his diet? And what can I do to prevent him from doing his business outside of the litter? I don’t want him to think that’s okay!

I can’t see diet change causing change in litter habits.

Is he peeing right outside the box or in other spots around the cage? If he’s peeing just outside it, I would try a bigger litter box. If you are not, fill his box with hay to encourage him to spend time in there.

Uncharacteristic peeing outside of box can sometimes be indicative of bladder, urinary tract issues so keep a close eye on him, how much he’s peeing, drinking, etc.
