I’m having a lot of trouble keeping my parrot off the top if Mimzy’s cage. I don’t want him on there because he poops up there which drops into her cage which stains her wood trim or dirties her water. He knows he is not allowed up there but will go on it if i leave the room for a short time. So i was thinking maybe a chloroplast top? It would be basically the same as people who use it as a bottom for cages but on the top of the cage. My concern is, would the air flow be more stagnant in her cage? It gets hot in my room in the summer. Also, how would i open the door? She has a whole panel of grids that opens as her door, 4 grids tall. Any ideas? I need something that my birds feet cant really grip onto.

I don’t see why it would make the air stagnant – there is plenty of air flowing through the sides. Maybe just cut the chloroplast a few inches larger than the cage and place it on top flat. That way you can still open the door instead of cutting sides to fold down.

Was trying to add photos before but it wouldn’t let me from my phone. Maybe these pics will help

Sarita – I was just wondering if the air wouldn’t get inside her cage as easily as it would being just wide open all the time. The top would be similar to the one in this photo:

            Rabbit cage with top

(This was a cage I based Mimzy’s cage off of that is shown on BinkyBunnies’ housing pics)

Although looking at this one again, it looks like there is some kind of lip cut out to open the whole panel if needed.

What I would do is attach the coroplast top to everywhere but the door. What you can do is cut out a straight pannel of coroplast that spans the entire top and zip tie it to the tops of the NIC cubes. So that way you don’t have to worry about the door catching on anything as you’re opening and closing it.

Can’t see the picture in the link because my internet is being super slow right now but I think both of the suggestions above would work great! The one Sarita said would work if you only want to cover her cage when the bird is out (that way you wouldn’t need to worry about the air flow, although I think it is fine if you had a top) or if your bird is always out you could do what skipper suggested!

I think both suggestions would work pretty well. My mom also suggested using plexi glass, basically just the way Sarita suggested and attaching something to the plexi glass edges so that it won’t slip off at all.
She did the same with a small drawer thing she had that had no top, she just used the clear plastic that is used to cover wall corners. She cut it up in small pieces and attached it to the under side of the top to where it won’t slip off the drawers. If that makes sense at all? haha.
                  Basically an L shaped piece.

We are kind of going through ideas. Another idea was to leave the whole top open like it is right now and just cutting a slit all the way down a piece of PVC pipe to fit over the top of the NIC grids. That way it will be widely rounded and probably slippery/hard to grip but still open. And the door will have it’s own individual piece. Just don’t know if that would be as pretty hehe.

Thing with plexi glass is it will be heavier but allow more light through so it might be a trial and error thing what your condo can hold weight wise. And as for air flow, you could always add a bunny-proofed fan to the floor area to move air around in the summer. Mimzy might like sitting in front of it too. Mine love to sit in front of fans even in the winter.

I wouldn’t worry about air flow – I have one of my rabbits in a 3 story Leith Condo and it has a top and it’s no problem at all for him.
