I took my rabbits in to get speutered this morning. Well, it turns out they are both girls. This is not what is upsetting. I have talked to my vet about the rabbits several times before I trusted her with my little “boy and girl”, that are now girls. She seemed very knowledgeable. Anyway, everything went well except that she sent me home with no pain meds and told me I wouldn’t need them….

I waited 3 hours to see how the girls were doing, and decided that Toph (used to be named Korra before the boyfriend decided to rename her -_-) needed some pain meds. She seemed very uncomfortable and hasn’t eaten a thing. So I called and asked for some metacam. They gave me enough for one day and for one rabbit! I was expecting to pay for it but they just let me have it. I am watching Ash, the one that turned out to be a girl for signs of pain but she seems to be doing very well.

I have a syringe, pumpkin, and oxbow pellets ready to make a mash if I need to syringe feed Toph. My question is:

How much metacam do vets generally prescribe, because I would like to just PAY FOR SOME AND GET THE CORRECT AMOUNT! How many days should a rabbit take pain meds? Also, how long does it take for a rabbit to start eating again… I read about all this and I really thought I was ready but now I’m kind of freaking out ><

If I remember correctly, I used .5ml of metacam once a day with Thane after his neuter.

Dosage depends on weight of the rabbit. There is not recommended amount of time a rabbit should get pain meds – that depends on every situation.

Female rabbits generally take a full 24 hours to recover from the actual surgery so I would not expect that in 3 hours she would need pain meds. They generally do a metacam or pain injection prior to the spay anyway. From there it can take 3 or 4 days for a female to get back to “normal”.

I don’t have meds at all, so I am debating going back to buy some if they will sell it to me… this is very frustrating. I will have to research how much to give for their weight once per day.

Good news: Ash ate some parsley

Well, if the vet prescribes pain meds, they will calculate the dosage and amount and give you that with the meds.

I believe that I was given 3 days worth of Metacam for my rabbit after her spay. The vet gave her the pain medication on the day of surgery, and then we gave her the Metacam for the following 3 days.

When my boy was neutered, I got three days worth of meds too.

Velvet had no pain meds sent home after spay, but she was pretty groggy for at the very least 24 hrs after we got home.

I got 5 days worth of metacam with both my girls, and 3 days for Squirrel when i got him neutered. Pain meds are absolutely necessary, its a full hysterectomy, would you want to have no pain meds if you had that done?

Oh no, poor girls! I don’t remember enough about the dosage to be of help there (it was a couple years ago) but I’m definitely sending positive thoughts your way for a double spay recovery.

Poor little girls. My vet gave me several days worth of Metacam after speuters. If they are still in obvious pain, I would def call the vet to ask for some.

Poor girls! I’m here just to chime in with everyone else. I would definitely call your vet if your girls look like they are in pain. My vet gave my girl a shot of pain meds before she left and gave her five day doses of metacam for afterward. My little girl is about 4lbs so they gave her .5ml of metacam and they had one syringe for each day already measured out for me. It depends on the bun for when they start to eat again. You want to make sure that its at least within 24 hours of the spay. (((((((Healing vibes for your girls))))))))
