Hi guys! Another “is it safe” thread. :X

I was at the grocery store checking out herbs and saw this neat package of organic “edible flowers.” I thought it would be awesome to be able to feed these, but its hard to find out what flowers are safe and what’s not. Just wanted to know if anyone knows for sure that at least one of these is NOT safe, so I can just forget about it.

These flowers were listed to be included in the package:

Rose, geranium, lavender, nasturtium, cornflower, snap dragons. BB’s list has rose and nasturtium as safe, and some other sites list the others as safe sometimes and not safe other times, so I just wanted some advice. I won’t even think of buying it until I can be fully confident that it’s safe … but I have a feeling it’s not.

If you want to give your bunny edible flowers, I think the bunny specific dried ‘ salads ‘ are a better bet.
Excel ( http://www.burgesspetcare.co.uk/products/rabbit.html ) and Naturals ( http://www.rosewoodpet.com/brands/brand.aspx?bid=561 ) do nice ones. Bunnies can have lavender leaves, I’m not totally sure about the flowers though, I know snap dragon is poisonous.

Bunnylova do you know if they ship to the U.S.?

Eucalyptus I can’t remember where you’re stationed out of sorry. =\ But if you’re in the U.S. of course BB sells great edible flowers. But Bunspace, also, sells some yummy flowers too. I second Bunnylova that rose and nasturtium are okay. I would stay away from the snap dragons. As for the other flowers I’m not too sure. My buns aren’t big on edible flowers since they really love their hay and willow.

I don’t know if they ship to the US, sorry. You could probably find it on ebay, but BB or bunspace would probably be better.

Yeah, I’m in the US (Northern Cali specifically).

I know I can get stuff like that online, I was just hoping to buy locally because shipping charges can be costly. ^^; Otherwise, I’d be buying tons from BB already haha.

I was pretty sure that snap dragons weren’t safe, but I just wanted to confirm because there are TONS of misleading sites that say different things … half of the yahoo answers pages will tell you that lettuce is the worst veggie you could give a bunny. Really ..

I don’t want to be really contradictory, but some lettuce is. Not dark lettuce, but weak ones without vitamins can make them have diarrhea ( because of lactucarium, a poison for bunnies ) and have a soporific effect. It annoys me when people just think to give bunnies lettuce and carrots.

bunnylova how do you know so much about plants? It’s totally awesome! I wish I could learn more.

Eucalyptus have you gone to any of the farmers markets that they have? I grew up in the NorCal bay area and I remember having a ton of vendors at the farmers market that would sell flowers that you could easily dry on your own. I do believe that there are a few that have organic flowers to. Which would be cheaper than buying it already dried.

I only know about bunny related plants.  I tend to spend a lot of my spare time reading about bunnies on the internet .

From what I’ve learned, lettuce isn’t toxic, and iceberg is only “bad” because it lacks nutrients, making it worthless, like eating filler with no nutritional value. I might be wrong, though. I do feed a nice variety of organic baby lettuces and have never had a problem with them (they were all deemed safe based on cross references tons of sites).

I’m definitely not one to “just give bunnies lettuce and carrots.” I feed a wholeee lot more than that. That’s why I was interested in edible flowers, so I could add even more variety to my bun’s salads.

SM: We have an AMAZING farmer’s market nearby, and we get a lot of Java’s veggies from there already. I’ve seen a good amount of flower booths but they’re pretty pricey. >.< So we've always hesitated on that.

No, I would definitely never accuse you of that, I’m sorry if it looked like I did.

If the flowers in the flower-booths you mention aren’t meant for eating, just decoration, chances are they are heavily treated with pesticides. Flowers require lots of pesticides to look “perfect”.

You’ve probably already thought of this, though, and perhaps you can get organic flowers in the US, in Sweden that’s an unknown thing as yet.

My bun won’t eat flowers but the rabbit I had when I was a child was crazy about white clover-flowers.
