I noticed a few days ago that my dwarf bunny wasn’t eating, drinking, pooping, or being active. I took him to the vet and she said she didn’t think it was wool blockage, which is what I thought it was. She gave me Critical Care to give him 4-6 times a day and Baytril to give him every 12 hours. The next day he made a few poops, but they were very small. He nibbled on hay here and there but only a couple pieces. Then I noticed he was grinding his teeth very badly off and on. I took him to the vet again today. Two weeks ago he was 2lb 8oz. Today he is 2lb 3.5oz. He got an x-ray. The vet said it was good news because it wasn’t wool blockage and there was food in his stomach. She believes it’s GI Stasis. She gave him an injection of Famotidine and a fluid subcutaneous. Along with the Baytril and Critical Care, I have to give him Metacam/Meloxiam Oral Per MI every 12 hours. He hasn’t pooped since he’s been home today. Since the beginning of this he’s been active off and on, mostly sleepy, but I can tell he’s still in pain because he tries to force out poop. I try to give him tummy rubs but after a minute or so he tries to escape. He always eats his Critical Care and Baytril with the syringe. I also give him water with the syringe because I know he doesn’t drink himself. I was giving him pineapple juice yesterday and the day before, but not today. I haven’t given him his Metacam/Meloxicam because it hasn’t been 12 hours yet (the vet gave him the first dosage). With all of this said, I was wondering how long it takes until my baby recovers? I’m so worried he’s not going to make it. It has only been a couple days but I’m so scared for him. What were your experiences and how much longer will he have to take this?

I’m really surprised your vet has not given a gut motility med yet. If he still hasn’t toileted by tomorrow I would take him back in for this.

There really isn’t a time schedule for how long stasis lasts. If your rabbit had been active at times, this is good! His moving about will help get the contents of his gut moving.

The fluids he received were important. If he was dehydrated at all they would be absorbed into his tissues and take time to soften food in his tract (if at all). So syringing fluids will help more directly to do this. Do keep doing this when you can.

He may not have pooped today because a bit of stress from the vet visit. Having said that though, sometimes a little stress and the a trip in the car can actually help get things going.

Many (((vibes))) for your boy. Keep offering different things for him to eat. Herbs might interest him a bit.

Well, with food in his stomach, it could be a blockage because the food matter is not moving through. He needs lots of fluids to help break up the food and get it moving.

I’ve had rabbits in stasis for up to a week and that is with very aggressive vet care – basically taking them daily to the vet for fluids and feeding.

Did the vet say what he thought the cause of stasis is? It is a condition and not an actual disease – perhaps he has some dental problems causing him to not to want to eat.

              How is your bunny today?

I’m a bit confused as to why your vet would give Baytril. That’s something my vet never did.

I’ve had rabbits that have stasis for several days or a day or so, then they seem to get better and it recurs.

I ditto the others. Fluids are extremely important, whether it’s a blockage or just gut slow down.
