Hey everyone, I’m Sibi, and I’m new to the bunny world! I don’t have any bunnies yet, but I’m hoping to get some in a few months, I just want to do my research and get prepared so they’ll have the best home I can give them. I’m going to get two, and get them neutered or spayed if they aren’t already, but I’ll be adopting my bunnies from a rescue, so hopefully they already will be. I’ve never owned bunnies before (but I’ve had guinea pigs), so I’m not sure what kind of breed will be best for me. I’ll be glad to take any suggestions or tips for choosing a breed and raising my buns, so thanks in advance, and I can’t wait to get to know you and your bunnies!

Welcome! It’s great that you are getting your first bunnies from a rescue – it is so rewarding! In regards to choosing them, the bunny i rescued chose ME so that may be the same for you!! You might just see them and fall in love What an exciting time, good luck in getting prepared

Thanks so much! And I’m pretty sure I’ll fall in love as soon as I see them. : D Just a question though, I’m designing their cage right now (would rather build it than buy it). I’m planning on making it with a 2×4 base and a 2×2 loft area, so about 12 square feet for the cage. Do you think that’ll be big enough? Once they get used to it, they’ll have free run of my whole area of the house, but I want them to have enough room while they’re in their cage. I’m also making it an open cage, so it isn’t going to be covered. I was thinking the walls would be about 1 foot high, do you think that’ll be high enough? It’s going to be raised about 2 feet above the ground with a ramp up to it, I just want to make sure they wont try to jump over the side to get out and hurt themselves when the ramp is closed.

Ok, so what are you making the cage out of? That’ll give me a better idea of how to help you design it Also, if you go on the habitat section of the forum there are some great ideas there, and experts who will help you … alternative on the photos part of the forum you can see other people’s set ups and get inspired! You’ll definitely fall in love with a pair of buns, and there will be no going back!! Be careful, they are addictive

Oh that’s a good idea, I’ll do that! I was planning on making the cages out of coroplast (it’s just like plastic cardboard) because that’s what my guinea pig cages were made out of. But I don’t know if the buns would chew it too much. I think I’ll draw up what I’m planning and make a post about it in the habitat section!

Ah yes, i think a couple of people on here have coroplast cages, or quite a lot of ones made out of NIC cubes with coroplast bases? Have a look around and see what you like the look of, everyone in the habitat section will give you all the advice you need So exciting planning cages and bunny bits!!

If you get two. Consider two that are already bonded that way you won’t have to go through the stress of bonding.

That’s definitely my plan. (: I can’t wait to go to the rescue to see them, but I know I can’t get them for a few months, so I don’t want to go and get attached to a pair and have someone adopt them first! So hard to make myself wait!
