Hi all- I need some help with my 5 year old-ish bun Grover. He’s going on a month since EC flared up suddenly. He’s been having slight boughts here and there. Went through 3 week treatment this fall and healed. This time around he has lost all strength in all 4 legs, kidney failure and blindness in one eye. First round was Baytril, Metacam, and albendozole-no improvement. He’s now on tertracyline injections, metcam, and panacur. (4th day no change). He is eating well with help and I can tell he’s desperate to be “normal”, he flails his legs about, but can not stand at all. When I try to stand him he’s floppy and weak.
I’m very worried the muscle damage is permenent after a month? The vet is having me do 15 rotations/flexes of each joint usually 3x a day of more. I don’t think it’s helping. I’m just not sure how else to help him at this point. I was wondering if acupuncture might help?? Or any other med combinations to try? Poor bun.
Adding-I sometimes give him turmeric for anti-immflamatory and elderberry for immune support.

Or any other med combinations to try?

Yes, you could talk to your vet about adding Ponazuril (toltrazuril). It has been used off label (as most meds are for rabbits) to treat EC alongside panacur. Your vet will likely need to research it a bit.

I understand it does take while for panacur to take effect so hoping you’ll see more of an improvement if you’re only 5 days in so far. It’s the norm to do a 28 day course.

          {{{Vibes}}} for your Grover!

Also, thanks for posting about Tumeric. Do you find it helps? I’ve been wondering about it and whether it would help arthritic rabbits.

I think so, I give him 1/4 of a capsul at night since the vet doesn’t want him on more than 1 dose of metacam a day. Turmeric is a fantastic anti-cancer, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory supplement, I take one a day myself because I hate the taste in food. I mix Grover’s in with OJ, he loves it.
I have never heard of the other meds you mentioned. I will bring it up to the vet. Thank you

Ponazuril and Toltrazuril sulfone are one and the same. : )
It’s also been used for coccidia in rabbits.

I’m lucky enough to get fresh tumeric root and I throw it into a juicer and mix it with Pineapple juice (otherwise the tumeric is much too bitter).  It is definitely helpful with anti-infammatory issues, but I take it to hopefully ward off Alzheimers which is in my family.

ANYWAY, back to the subject at hand. My vet used Ponazuril for my bunny who had hind leg weakness due to e.c.  I did see some improvement, but using Ponazuril long term can cause a lack of appetite, so it’s not something that we could use as long as other drugs. We had to take a break from it before restarting.  We also tried acupuncture and Bunny Physical therapy — where I would gently stretch and bend Bailey’s legs and massage her leg muscles to keep them from getting too stiff.   Bailey was able to do a weird hop and I had her move about a little obstacle course every day to try and keep her muscles strong, but mostly to get her brain to re-establish new pathways of getting messages to her legs. (as the E.C can damage that, causing the non-function).  All of this helped a lot.  She never fully got her gate back, but she made improvements — falling/tipping over less.

In your case with complete paralysis, I am not sure how much permanent damage has been done — or what can be healed.  I know that one bunny at a shelter had severe head tilt for a year — but he got used to the tilt and just walked around with his head sideways — he was spunky and happy.  Someone wonderful adopted him and begin giving him neck massages and over time he made real improvement.  Again, each case is different, some do better than others and some have a hard time having the quality of life they deserve and owners are faced with tough decisions.

I don’t have much experience with EC other than Fenbendazole, but I just want to offer my well wishes for poor little Grover. ((((Feel Better Soon Grover)))))
