        Hi Guys,

I’m adopting an older female bun. She’s about the 5yr mark. I am taking her from a family who have had her for most of her life but now are moving away and cannot take her. She’s not been neutered and I have heard that the risk of neutering an older female bun is quite high.

I liked her immediately as she has been around other animals and is that bit older. I also like that she is litter trained and super friendly. We’ll soon see how we get on when we try bonding her with Thane.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Pix!

The risk of uterine cancer is greater than the risk of spaying. I would just advise you to get a rabbit savvy vet and have bloodwork done.

I was thinking the same thing. I’ve emailed my vet to get her opinion on it.

              I agree with Sarita.

She’s cute! Wonderful of you to take on an older bun. They need love just as much as babies.

She’s super adorable. Love that she has a little dewlap, I think they’re beautiful!

                On the topic of bonding.

If my vet isn’t keen to spay her, at her age, what kind of behaviour can I expect hormonally? Do you think she will be okay to bond with Thane anyway? I’m not familiar with older buns.

                  She is super cute!

I think the spay should be done if it’s deemed safe, in order to avoid uterine cancer. However, be prepared that even if she’s spayed you might see some latent hormones in her behavior. I got one of my bunnies at a shelter when she was about 3, and they had spayed her when she was 2ish when she came in. Even though she is NOT the dominant rabbit in my pair, she still tries to hump the other once in a while.

                  Good luck!

I’ve had a chat with my vet and we’re bringing her in for a pre-spay check on Monday.

Pray everything is well with her and that she has no health issues!

That’s great. five is not that old for an experienced vet to do the procedure, and if she’s OK to have it done, it will spare both of you a difficult time down the road.

Oh my goodness she has a cute little dew lap! I hope everything is okay for her to get the spay! =] I bet Thane would love to have her as a long time companion. =]
