I’m getting a baby (10 week) old bunny in a week or 2, and I was wondering what the best brand of pellets were to get for the bunny. I was thinking of getting Oxbow Essentials – Young Rabbit Food, which is an alfalfa pellet. Do you guys think that is an okay brand, or is there something better, or should I get timothy pellets? Thanks

        -Crystal

I was going to recommend oxbow young rabbit food even befre you mentioned it. Oxbow is about the best rabbit pellet on the market right now. You should give your bunny alfalfa pellets untill the bunny is about 7 months old and then you can start feeding Timothy pellets. I would recommend oxbow adult rabbit food for when you bunny is older. Oxbow can be a little expensive but I believe it’s worth it

Oxbow does run on the more expensive side. But when it comes to rabbit food, you are paying for what you’re getting. Oxbow tends to be the most highly recommended rabbit pellet from what I have seen. My vet recommended that we feed it to our rabbits. And I highly value and trust her judgement. So I would go ahead with Oxbow.

You don’t have to get alfalfa pellets. I would find out what type of pellets the bun is on now (tim or alfalfa) and transition him onto the higher quality Oxbow of the same type.

If you feed tim pellets, give the bunny some alfalfa hay in addition to tim hay. If you feed alfalfa pellets, you can give tim hay just fine. Whatever you do, make sure the bun gets exposed to tim hay from an early age. That is what is going to make up the bulk of his diet for his entire life, so it’s important he get some from the start.

Oxbow is an amazing company that makes high quality products. Look into your online ordering options. Stores mark-up the smaller 5-lb bag to almost the same price as the 10-lb bag online. Even with paying for shipping, it is still cheaper to order online than go to the store.
