        Hi,

Thumper is a 2 year old male whom we adopted at 6 months of age.
He was fully litter trained when we got him and since neutering at 8 months, we haven’t had any problems.
        Until now…
We moved home about a month ago and Thumper settled in quickly, he explored his new domain quickly and carried on with his normal routine.
A couple of nights ago he jumped up onto the sofa as he usually does but this time left a lot of droppings and pee. We thought it was a one off so washed the covers to remove e the scent but he has continued doing it every night.
I am presuming this is a reaction to the change in environment as he is not acting any differently other than this but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this kind of behaviour? If so, how did you break this smelly pattern?
        Thanks in advance,
        Adam

Mine was doing that, so I actually took his litter, and placed it in the new place, and and didnt even get another one for the cage. he quickly went to that, and instead of peeing on my things, he goes in the litter in that area. He also wont pee or poo where his litter is when hes in the closed pen. So basically when I get home, first thing I do is open the pen door, and take the litter out, more it to the ‘open pen’ area’ and no probems, when I leave for work, take the litter, put it back in the pen, and close it.

Is he doing this when people are in the sofa or at other times?

It’s interesting if he hasn’t actually been marking elsewhere in the new place.

It’s hard to figure out sometimes. I have a pair that did this only when the door to the room was closed. They would leave a token when i was sitting there but i could prompt them off before they did more. But if left closed in the room, they’d use it like a litterbox. I piled things on top of it so they couldn’t get up there. Not the best long-term solution I know!

I also have a desexed male free range in the bedroom. 99% of the time he uses litter box only but then out of the blue, he’ll decide to mark the bed. Next day, back to good habits.

I hope Thumper is becoming more reliable again. If not, I think either put a litter tray up there temporarily or don’t allow him up there at all.

I’m wondering if the sofa was moved by someone he smells, or was placed in the new room on an unfamiliar scent that he’s trying to overpower. Was anyone in this home before you, and did they have a pet? sometimes our bunnies pick up on something that makes them feel strongly about marking their territory. Maybe he wants ownership of the couch.
Try keeping a small litterpan not far from there, put a few poos in it and maybe a bit of peed-on litter too. It should encourage him to go there when he needs to, without going all the way back to his home based pan.
