I have a new ( male ) rescue lop called Oreo. I’ve put him in with my older lion head rex ( female ) called Vienna who’s partner sadly died. I have been successfully bonding them and am making some progress but when he is put in with her or when he was put in his temporary hutch in our house he softly ground his teeth. At first I thought he was just chewing but when I put him in the carrier without food he still ground his teeth. It’s very quiet and I can only hear it if I put my head very close. I don’t think it’s a physical problem as he has been checked over by the vet when he went to have his vaccinations and to be neutered a couple of days ago. Is it stress? I’m sure I read somewhere that loud teeth grinding means pain but it’s very quiet. Is it something to do with him being a lop? I know they can have teeth problems.

I’ve found something on the internet that says it’s purring and means he’s happy!?!? That can’t be right! Maybe he is in love with Vienna but she just wont accept him.

Soft, gentle grinding is a sign of happiness and comfort. Loud, harder grinding is pain.

That must mean he is a very funny bunny

Does this mean happy too? He has been sort of ‘flopping’ to lie down ( going from sitting straight to lying ) it looks to me like he is really relaxed, but I might be wrong. This has been happening in the bonding too.

When a bunny goes from standing to flopping on it’s side, it’s called dead bunny….and they will only do this if they feel safe/comfortable.  So it seems your bunny is liking his new environment.

That’s really surprising as Vienna is being a grumpy bun and thumping at him. She’s even nipping him sometimes if he gets too close!

Early on in their bonding, by baby used to do dead bunny…even though Baxter was a grump. Maybe Oreo doesn’t find Vienna’s behavior that threatening. This being said, baby Boo was always on alert – so if he heard Baxter move toward him – he was ready to flee.
