So, Moonpie has been doing some heavy duty shedding for the past two months. When I say shedding, I mean chunks of fur coming out when you touch him, and bald spots. It started at his shoulders and has been moving to his back slowly, he still has most of his back end to go.

How often do they shed their whole coat? It’s been frustrating having hair all over the place, and not being able to hold him without wads flying around the room. I took him to a spa day that the rescue was having, everyone there thought he had some horrible disease . I definitely got more than a few sideways glances, as I walked around with him and was followed by a cloud of hair.It wasn’t until some of the more experienced ladies there convinced everyone that it was totally normal for bunnies to shed, and sometimes be kinda bald that people stopped looking at me like I was a horrible  owner. They taught me a few good tricks, and I have got it mostly under control (aka I take him outside everyday for twenty min, and pet.pull the loose hair out)…..but I’d be happy to see the end of this coat blow nonsense.

He was at the shelter for almost two years, and they said he never did this there. I guess he knew if he was red eyed, half blind, and bald he’d never get adopted .

So to summarize this ramble, how often do they shed their whole coat, and how long does it usually last?

This is him a few weeks into the shed, he looked much worse.

This is him now. He looks quite a bit better (or so I think). He was searching for some craisins I dropped.

He’s so sweet! You know it really does vary by rabbit some of mine only do it once a year and usually it’s not too bad so hopefully it won’t be too often for Moonpie either.

Moonpie is a total cutie! Ditto Sarita. Some buns sheds more than others. He may be going through such a bad shed because he’s being fed a ‘proper’ healthy diet by you and is shedding all his old dead hair.

My Penny had a “lumpy” shed kind of like that a while back:

She hasn’t shed like that since and never did it before. It was around a pretty drastic weather change and I don’t think I was properly regulating the bunny room’s temperature at the time. It took about a couple months for her to stop being lumpy and look like a normal bunny.

Some bunnies blow their coats in patterns. My bunnies typically molt a couple of times a year.

                  Moonpie is such a cutie!

Yeah… my Squirrel is almost done a shed like that. It seems to have lasted forever! But he’s down to just having a fluffy skirt to shed now
