Bud is only 3 lbs so I give him a table spoon of pellets three times a day (I read in one of many rabbit care books that this is what they need). He’s got unlimited hay and a big salad every evening. He seems so hungry though, every time I walk past the cupboard where I keep his pellets he begs for it and sometimes I give in and let him have some extra but as soon as I do he leaves his cecotropes. If I stick to three table spoons a day he eats it but as soon as I go over he leaves some. Do you know anything I could give him so he’s not hungry but not overfed? Thanks.

If he’s hungry, he’ll eat his hay. I think he’s just using his wiles on you to get more pellets.
          Stay strong ! Lol

There are lots of things you can give to mix it up a little for him.
You can a variety of hays and dried grasses as treat hay. Fresh or dried willow, rose petals and leaves, brambles, dandelions, apple leaves, apple wood.

How old is Bud? For adult rabbits (>6 months), the recommendation is to feed 1/4-1/2 cup of pellets per 6 lb of rabbit, so Bud should be receiving 1/8 – 1/4 cup. Uneaten cecals can often be caused by a diet that is too rich, so if you find that giving him extra pellets causes him to leave cecals, it should be an indication that the extra amount is too much.

As long as he has unlimited hay and a nice healthy salad, he shouldn’t be going hungry…my little brats beg for food no matter how much I feed them too, haha.

Buddy’s 8 months. How much actually is 1/2 cup? I’m not sure I know what that means, I use a table spoon to measure.

I give him timothy hay, dandelion and marigold herbage (Burgess), barn dried forage (Burgess as well), dried camomile and dried herbal forage (both Woodlands) as snacks. He eats quite a lot of all of it actually. I’ve never seen any rose petals or apple wood in the shops but I’ll search online. The pellets are burgess exel for adult rabbits. He was on muesli when I got him from the rescue but I kept reducing it and now he doesn’t have any as I heard it’s not good for his teeth. He gets a big veg salad every night and a bit of apple, banana, strawberry and carrot but not much.

Thanks for reassuring me, I hate to see Buddy unhappy, I thought for a while I was starving him
