My rabbit who injured his back and was being confined to his cage to heal came down with fly strike.

I washed off all the maggots i could see but from the way he’s trying to kick in his box I’m guessing there are more. What could I do to stop them.

Any home remedies to slow/stop them. I’ve put corn flour to keep him dry as I have read but am not sure.

He’s 3 months and recently an indoor bunny (cashmere mini lop)

        –extremely worried–

I have had a rabbit who was free range that died from it :s

I did a google search and found these :

           MedicalAnimal.Com – Flystrike

           Rabbit Haven – Flystrike

           Rabbit.org – Flystrike

I hope it helps but I would get him to a vet ASAP when they open.  :/

          Sending good thoughts your way.

I would find an emergency vet, any vet, regardless of whether they are use to bunnies. Failing that get him in a bunrito and check the area, use a magnifying glass and tweezers and make sure you get every single maggot. But a find a vet for treatment. If they don’t know bunnies they can call for help or look online. The most important thing right now is to control the infestation and prevent them from burrowing in and causing infection and other damage.

Ditto Roberta. Flystrike can be fatal so try get your rabbit to an emergency vet.
Ditto tweezers and magnifying glass and good lighting.

I’d also be completely stripping out his cage, put in new litter & bedding and putting it and bunny in a room that’s fly free.
Does he have an open wound or messy bottom?

              {{{vibes}}} for your bunny.

I found a good defense is old fashioned fly papers. You can buy them online in bulk packs where as they are hard to purchase retail. Also there is a range of window decals that look like daisies and sunflowers that actually attract the flies and poisons them. They are excellent as they will not leave chemical residue that can harm other pets.

hi here is a helpful tip i was told by a vet if you can not make it to a vet immediately and your rabbit has fly strike/maggots.
Use a large syringe filled with diluted iodine/bettadine antiseptic and flush the maggots out. wipe off with a damp cloth when they wash out of the cavity & repeat until no maggots are visible. You can pick/wipe any off that you can access.
This flushing with a syringe is helpful if maggots are embedded in the skin or a cavity.

The iodine on the skin is gentle and does not sting and it is a quick way to remove maggots especially if there are a lot and tweezers are not effective.

repeat a few hours after to be sure you have removed all rabbits.

Get the rabbit to a vet as soon as you can as the rabbit will need antibiotics and a check up. If your rabbit is lethargic or looking very unwell and droopy ring a vet for advice as probably critical to get them treated immediately.

If you are confident your bunny has no maggots and seems alert and quite normal, take them to vet as soon as you can – within 24 hours.

and definitely, keep all flies away from your rabbit and keep fur trimmed any where there is wound, dampness or soiling.

I hope this is helpful to bunny lovers

lulustarman, thank you for posting this very helpful info!

This thread is old though, from 2013, and we ask members to please not post in old threads, because it might create confusion. If you like, start a new topic here New Topic

I’m locking this particular thread now, but your tip will of course be displayed when someone does a search on flystrike, so it is available to lots of bunnyowners, even if the thread itself is locked.
