While I knew Azura was pretty fat, it wasn’t until I brought her home today that I realized exactly how fat she is. She breathes hard after just a few hops, and I’m 75% certain it’s all because of weight (but I am calling a vet in the AM to schedule a checkup anyway to get their opinion).

Anyone have any suggestions to encourage weight loss? I was planning on feeding her few to no pellets as a start, but I feel like she’s gonna need more than that. Anyone have any suggestions to exercise an XXXL bunny?

It’s always best to get a vet recommended diet. My guess is the vet will recommend a reduction in pellets. Cut out all treats for now.

If the vet check goes okay and there is nothing else wrong, you can try to give her exercise by making her work for her veggies at mealtime. Show her the bowl and make her follow it around the living room for a bit before giving it to her. This is what my vet recommended when my cat was overweight.

Making her work for her veggies is a great idea, and I also agree with cutting the treats. I imagine the stress of moving into a new environment with new territory to check out might give her a kick-start on weight loss, which should be a good thing.

Saw her video and she’s lovely but yes, she could do with some slimming which is not unusual for shelter rabbits since they usually live on a diet of pellets and get little to no exercise.

I wouldn’t cut out the pellets cold turkey on her though – see how she eats her veggies if she is familiar with them and then try more veggies and less pellets. I think that scattering her pellets is a good idea so she can forage for those and it can be mentally and physically stimulating for her.

She’s been without pellets in the shelter, so it’s not cold turkey. She was on a hay only diet there.

ETA: Vet visit tomorrow morning. We’ll see what they advise.

That would at least make the no pellet diet much easier!
